Lions are in trouble. They lost 8,000 members last year and their crowds dropped by 9,000.

The Suns have severely eaten into the Lions support. Very few AFL supporters in Queensland and all the introduction of the Suns has done is spilt the fan base.

The year the Titans were introduced the Broncos increased their members and crowd numbers.
Of course the lions dropped crowds and membership! Theyre severely crap on field! Plus they would have lost fans to the suns like you said. I'm happy to admit that.

But overall, for afl in QLD ther are now more members and more crowds. This is hardly a negative!

the AFL's average crowd in SE QLD dropped from 29K to 19K in one year
It WILL drop again in 2012

& again in 2013
the Lions won't go anywhere while the AFL continues to give all the draft preferences to GWS & the Thuns
& they're wasted on the Thuns who will be bottom 4 for some years to come
if they both stay above 15K average crowds . it will be a miracle

the Broncos will continue their increase in memberships .. & attendances ( they'll hit 40K av attendance & 25K members in a few years )
they'll handle the AFL in SE Qld by themselves

add the Titans & Bombers ( from 2015) & RL will see off yr silly little victorian sport
once n for all
All speculation.

Lock it in Eddie. Let's see if it happens.

The average crowd for afl in qld was always going to drop with a brand new expansion team and the lions traveling so badly. The afl would have accounted for this and wouldnt be concerned in the slightest. However if the lions were making the finals and the crowds were dropping then they may have concerns.

But irrespective of the averages more people are attending and watching AFL in QLD than ever before, and by quite a decent margin.

I am predicting that in 2015 the Lions and the Suns will still be kicking goals, and there won't be any Titans. Just the Broncos.

EVERYONE of the Lions and Suns games were shown live on FTV in Queensland.

The Broncos, Titans and Cowboys only get FN games live on FTV in Queensland if chosen.

FN is the biggest rating night for both codes. the broncos dominated this night by some margin. The suns had no fn games as did the lions.

Get used to the great coverage for afl in QLD. It's even better this year.

its just a smoke n mirrors exercise from the AFL to claim an improvement in the codes position , again

if the same were to occur in the NRL .. its far smarter .. far more discerning fans would ask

what did we pay for this " modest " improvement ?

clubs entiteld to draft preferences .. denied these
the AFL allowing a larger salary cap to the thuns this year & last & GWS too, so they can take struggling clubs talent off them ... even if these clubs could find the extra dough to keep their talent .. they couldn't use it ...as it would have exceeded the salary cap
I mean .. What the F #-o

so no prospects of improvement in their standing on the ladder .. & none in 2012 either

435k attended afl in southern Qld this year, up from 329k the year before. That's a favorable result in anyones books irrespective of the average.

The cost of expansion in foreign markets will always be significant. This is why the NRL are stuck in eastern Australia. They're just not wealthy enough for expansion, and any attempt would require a high level of financial support because the interest just isn't there outside of NSW and QLD.

In 20 years time when the lions, suns, giants and swans are well established the NRL will be scratching their arses thinking "what did we do wrong?"

Expansion in foreign markets is expensive. Thankfully the AFL have the funds to see it through. Their wealth is due to a combination of tv rights, attendances, memberships and sponsorship. These will ensure they have the resources to see the expansion through.

One of the main reasons the AFL expansions will work is because of the increase in ARs grass roots competitions in NSW and Qld.
http://www.sportingpulse.com/get_file.cgi?id=1623063

In 2007, 19 clubs fielded 62 teams. The Sydney AFL now boasts 22 clubs fielding 78 teams. This is a far cry from the lows of 1998 when just seven teams took the field. Where in 2007 total playing numbers were 2155, in 2011 they stand at 2914 (a 35 percent increase). The league has gone from seventeen to nineteen under-18 teams in the same time. Senior playing numbers have risen by 530 since 2008 (up 30 percent), and the under-18 teams have also risen by 114 (Up 20 percent).

RL is decades behind the AFL in expansion into foreign markets because RL grass root comps in afl states are few and far between.

These are the reasons AFL expansions will work and NRLs will struggle or fail.

The NRL aren't required to fund expansion.

We actually have people and locations that are so desperate to get an NRL team that they are willing to start their own bids and fund them.

You know all those Gold Coast Suns game that were said to be sold-out but still fell short of capacity. The reason why is because they have no corporate support.

No AFL support. No GC Suns. Local businesses and business people are just not interested.

I'm talking about expansion beyond your heartland states. Are the NRL content to remain in QLD and NSW while the afl just move in?
