Friday nights see an NRL double header played live from 7:30pm with the second game delayed from 9:30pm. The live and delayed games are mostly alternate games in NSW and QLD depending on who is playing (and example Friday night would be: Brisbane Broncos vs South Sydney live in QLD and Parramatta vs Cantebury live in NSW with the games switched in the respective markets from 9:30pm).

As you can see in the figures above, there is a massive drop off in viewers for the delayed game.

Bear in mind also that the AFL broadcast goes for more than 3 hours and is most of the time not live, yet still rates better over that period than 2 NRL games where Channel 9 picks the fixtures 6 weeks in advance (often resulting in clashes involving top of the table teams).

Again as you can see, massive viewer numbers for the AFL involving a team from regional Victoria and a team from Western Australia. Figures will be even bigger next season with all games expected to be going live.
our 687K has to have the regionals added
that was 430K for last week for a national audience of 1.117 Million
we just missed the top 40 shows with 1.145 mill being the cut off

http://www.thinktv.com.au/SiteMedia/w3s ... 8_2011.pdf

the AFL's Friday night telecast didn't make the top 40 shows for last week overall either , even with 873K in metro ratings
( the largest its been for weeks .. have a ganda at the week befores numbers 8-[ )
meaning regional veiwer numbers for the AFL last Friday night were less then 272K . .. how much less its hard to say .. AFL club ratings almost never make it into the top 40 programs ..while the NRL does at least once every two weeks
Oh here we go again. What about the regionals? What about the regionals?

No one cares and more importanly the broadcasters and advertisers don't care. How anyone can take the regionals seriously when most parts of AFL heartland aren't even counted is beyond belief.

Note: Tasmania has not been included in Aggregated market results due to it being a market with composite network affiliations.
So much for accuracy of the report. Bring back one with Tasmania included - if it exists.

Becasue they don't cover all markets. That being the case they cannot be taken seriously. Joke of a system it seems clear in measuring what Australians are watching in regional areas if you ask me and the broadcasters.

Most ?
its less then half of the regional population of the AFL states & half of this is counted anyway Tasmania .. but not included in regional figures .. probably because their so insignificant it doesn't matter

but Tasmanias numbers can be added to regional AFL veiwership anytime you want
be our guests

This isn't worth counting?

Adelaide Population: 1,203,873
SA Population: 1,644,642

Perth Population: 1,700,000
WA Population: 2,296,411

Tasmanian Population: 507,626

Total population missed by OzTam: 1,544,806

There will be 272K within that watching AFL. Easily.

for starters the gap between the metro & regional populations you've put up .. add up to 1,244,000
not 1.544 .. I don't know where you learnt maths :?

& secondly
look at the maps .. they cover nearly every person in WA & SA
Perths catchment population would be 2 million easily
Adelaides 1.5 Million

& thirdly
Tasmanias numbers are posted on a site , but not included ... again
have a frickin look for once ... add em on for all we care .. they're smaller then a hill of beans

the total missed wouldn't be 500K

1,644,642 - 1,203,873 = 440,769
2,296,411 - 1,700,000 = 596,411

440,769 + 596,411 + 507,626 = 1,544,806

Who failed at maths I wonder?

And I want sources for those catchment claims.

well stuff me , Im so used to you being wrong ...

& I posted the maps if you'd care to open your eyes

oh , & its worse then even I thought for AFL regionals
I'd say the maps cover 90% of the populations of both states
leaving a population not accounted for less then Canberras

FTA – Regionals
The NRL dominates is FTA regionals, for the obvious reason that there are five million people living in regional NSW and Qld and 2.57 million people living in regional Vic, WA, SA and all of Tasmania.

Regional figures are difficult for your average sports fan to find. However, the networks, Foxtel, NRL and AFL are well aware of the exact figures.

An idea of their importance can be seen with Game 1 of State of Origin this year.

FTA capital city ratings were 2.45 million, but when you put in the regional figures, the game rated 3.6 million.

That’s an extra 1.15 million people from the regionals.

The FTA networks make a staggering 2.2 times more advertising revenue from regional NSW and Qld than from regional Vic, WA, SA, and all of Tasmania and the NT.

Panels of home viewers supply the raw data that shapes what airs. The five major mainland cities are monitored by a panel of about 3000 homes. A further 2000 homes speak for regional Australia. (A third panel, with 1200 homes, tracks pay TV.).................Television is measured minute to minute and rated day to day through OzTAM, which is owned by the commercial networks. Australia monitors TV consumption more closely than best-selling books, top-grossing films, chart-busting music or even the fortunes of the federal government.
