I have not tallied the total numbers for FTA and Pay, but have now updated each round with all the ratings I could find in the respective codes tv ratings threads. Like you say, we cannot base popularity on Fox figures alone.

"One in every 24 Australians is now a member of an AFL club, a sign that the national reach of Australian football has never been greater," League CEO Gillon McLachlan said.

firstly, what punter of fan of AFL would actually watch all 9 games. ........................
secondly, AFL has the best coverage on FTA than any sport in Australia. (which actually lifts ratings)
thirdly, of course all numbers should be added up as a total. though you can also add
fox and FTA separately, it gives it a good run down..

no one is saying you would watch all 9 games. However, even if you can spare 6 hrs to watch sport on Saturday, that's 2 AFL games and 3 NRL games. Same viewing, 50% more ratings counted

Take my example for instance. If the Suns and Pies are on at the same time I can only watch 1.

Also, had to get fox as they always show the QLD teams into home markets on FTA so without Fox I would miss the game I want to watch also.

Fred, If you could watch every game you wanted than why would Pay TV pay Billions?

I think that’s another issue Pussy. I was just highlighting as an example ... if I had a set top box metre rating thing and the Suns and Pies were playing at the same time ... ratings for 1 game only however if on seperate or there would be ratings for the two games.... which I thought would be common sense and not need explaining. So games played in isolation would mean better ratings overall for each game.

Even if we go with your 2 game senario for your 8+ hours AFL of a Saturday.

afl.
Game 1 can be watched by 50% of viewers. say 50 people
Game 2 can be watched by 100% of viewers. say 100 people
Total possible viewers 150
NRL
Game 1 can be watched by 50% 0f viewers
Game 2 " " 50% of viewers
Game 3 " " 50% of viewers
Total possible viewers 150

What are you on about here Pussy ?

All I was saying in response to Leroy who put forth that no one is really going to watch all 9 games of afl ... this postulating that it doesn’t matter if they overlap... was that does if you have a set top box and can only watch one game when the other one you want to watch is on at the same time. It would have to impact ratings... by how much though ??

This is just total BS pal. The TV ratings companies put out the numbers. They do not have an Asterix against movies that go for 90 mins as opposed to those that go for 120 mins. Same applies to sport. No one anywhere talks about your BS except a few idiot fumblers here making more excuses.

End of story!!!!!!!!!!!

It's really a non issue and irrefutable - if two matches are on at once you can only watch one. I'm not sure why this is being questioned or argued about? If they were showed separately - you can watch should should you desire.

the AFL strategically schedule matches,

for example.

Suns v Swans is not going to rate that well if shown nationally in it's dedicated timeslot. (by it self)

So they schedule it with another match
Richmond v St Kilda for the Melbourne market > to boost the National total.

there is a reason the AFL do this and they have been doing it for years.
