most likely that AFL fund GC to the tune of ($34.8m) in 2024 (they have a right in where they play) ?
They fund them that much for a reason - purely to grow the game in the Gold Coast region - playing home games away from the Gold Coast I feel is counter-intuitive to that that. That the spend so much money is actually the arguement why they should not play home games away.
true points, But there the AFL's Baby well the AFL has 2 Babies SUNS AND GWS
So with the SUNS being the biggest baby of the lot they will have to listen to AFL>> if they decide where the funding goes..

It's AFL's vision>>

True - the AFL decide - still think it’s a dumb decision to play home games away from the area you want the te to be one embedded.

100% agree, if i were the AFL everything Suns did or were involved is everything
GOLD COAST into the Scenic Rim AND NORTHERN RIVERS>
literally along the path of what exactly the Titans do

i would be leaving NT and Darwin in particular to a Low drawing Victorian team

In the not too distant future North Melbourne and Hawthorn will be looking for another home away from home as the fly in fly out Tasmania deal becomes redundant.
Darwin is the best option for these two teams to consider.
The Sun's need to stay home and play all their home games locally.

365-day presence: Why Giants CEO wants more games in Canberra

(GWS would like to play more games in Canberra)

Well, I think a little bit like Hawthorn's presence in Tasmania, there's a number of things that we should all be pleased about with Canberra,” he added.

“The first thing is that it's given, the Giants have given the AFL a meaningful presence in Canberra.

“I mean, we're going to end up with over 7,000 members. We pretty much sell it (Manuka Oval) out.

So, what we do in Canberra, I think, as a club, we don't want to be a caravan rolling in and out.

“We want to have a 365-day presence. I'd like to play more games there.

“I think the pre-season games should become four point games, and that would allow us to play another men's game there. We play AFLW there.

Just move already - seriously - they are doing far better in Canberra than in Western Sydney. In saying that - there needs to be a presence in Western Sydney for AFL/Aussie rules. But maybe GWS move to canberra full-time - give it a few years- and restart from scratch re: the whole Western Sydeny experience. I would like them to align with a city out that way - but get that alienates the rest of the area - maybe dropping the Greater part of the name??/

A Canberra Southern NSW team should have been built decades ago to capitalise on the traditions of the game that go back to settler farming families that moved from Victoria into NSW due to land grants, bringing Australian rules football into this region almost 100 years ago.
Australian rules football was brought to Canberra when thousands of Federal public servants moved from Melbourne to Canberra.
Finally many Victorian holiday makers eventually moved South Coast of NSW and started up local competitions.
A footy legacy has always been in these areas.

Western Sydney never had much of an AFL legacy and so was a poor choice for a second NSW team. The Giant moniker also does not help, it's a shocker that fails to embrace potential fans
GWS needs to quietly change its name and move to where there is some support. .

I believe the AFL were right to target Western Sydney - the netrics all add up. It is a heavily populated area with a very low australian rules presence. An untapped market that needed to be tapped - or at least tried to be tapped. I think they have failed terribly - however facts remain the same as to why it was targeted in the first place - so I do not think it is wise to not try and tap this - it is a gold mine after all - and a rare one as AFL has basically "mined" most of the country to some respect - those areas worth mining anyway. Sydney Swans have more than done their job - but still challenging. Brisbane has forged, along the same lines as Storm, a formidable presence in the area - and growing. They are now accepted, have a sizable rusted on base, and get plenty of the media space for where they are. Gold Coast has always had a strong Australian Rules presence - and this has been solidified since the suns with junior numbers, and women's numbers growing strongly. Tassie has their team - always an aussie rules state. Northern Territory is predominantly Australian Rules too, particularly Darwin - but very low and spread out population. So really, Western Sydney is the last untapped market for the AFL and aussie Rules I feel - they simply just stuffed it up - got it wrong - the people are not on board at this stage - and work needs to be done. They have good on field success over the past few years - so it is not that - they just don't seem to have garnered the local's interest to any major extent. At the very least, it needs a massive review, that should come with something like - lets start again - name change, colour change (although quite like the colours with grey and orange) - giving it back to the people. As it is now - it is a team that has been dumped in the area, then crapped on the area by moving their home base - and people aren't buying it.
