i think the afl wanted compensation as well as the MCG wont be used so for a lot AFL games they'd have to use etihad which would mean a lot of fans would get locked out due to the lower capacity maybe a winter break could work, a lot of soccer leagues in europe have a winter break(summer for them) ...
