AFL, SANFL scrap AAMI agreement

THE AFL has avoided legal action by scrapping an agreement stipulating that all AFL games in South Australia must be played at AAMI Stadium.

The move came after the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) threatened legal action in a bid to get AFL matches played at Adelaide Oval.

Under the now-defunct agreement between the AFL and the ruling body of Australian Rules football in South Australia, the SANFL, all AFL games in Adelaide must be played at the SANFL owned and managed AAMI Stadium.

The AFL and SANFL said today they had abandoned the agreement, which the SACA had planned to legally challenge, believing it to breach the Trades Practices Act.

Does this decision by the AFL and SANFL effectively mean we will soon be seeing footy at the Adelaide Oval? Surely if that is the case, it could only be for games that don't attract big crowds in SA. You wouldn't think for instance, that the Showdowns could ever be held anywhere but Footy Park (AAMI Stadium).

Adelaide Oval is a big ground and can hold around 50,000. A Showdown could be held there. If they had AFL games at Adelaide Oval it will get huge crowds.

The Oval is only a 5 minute walk from the CBD and Railway Station and night games there would be awesome.

It is much easier for people to get to Adelaide Oval then to Footy Park and cannot believe it has taken the AFL and SANFL all this time to figure that out.

50,000, are you sure? That would make the capacity bigger than the SCG. Doesn't sound right to me.

Yep, they used to hold the SANFL Grand Finals there and it held up to 60,000 once upon a time.

Maybe, but is the capacity still 50,000? As I said, it just doesn't sound right. That ground when I've seen it on tv has no massive grandstands to accomodate such a crowd.

Just found the following article. Doesn't look like the Adelaide Oval will be hosting footy anytime soon:

Footy snub for Adelaide Oval

THE AFL has ruled out playing more games in Adelaide, despite the scrapping of a contract which restricted all matches to AAMI Stadium.

In a statement today, chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the AFL always reserves the right to decide where and when AFL games will be played.

"It has been the AFL's consistent view that Western Australia and South Australia are both mature football markets and one premiership match per week in those states is the right mix for our national competition," he said.

"It also is AFL policy to show preference to transfer matches to developing markets.

"We will continue to look at playing games in the developing markets in NSW, Queensland, Canberra, Darwin and Tasmania, not the established market in Adelaide."

His comments followed a bid by the South Australian Cricket Association to have some AFL games played at Adelaide Oval.
