That seems to be talk - selling off the land at the Gabba. Also, the new proposal apparently includes a hospital and other sporting infrastructure.

Suncorp's western grand stand ( which is actually the old grandstand from pre 2003) will be demolished & redone in the same configuration as the rest of the stadium for about $1 billion
capacity of the venue will increase to between 62,500 & 65,000

magnificent news for rectangle sports in Brisbane

Didn't it also say in the article you posted that a billion will be spent on the Gabba to make it a viable venue post 2032?

Also - is the athletics going to happen at Mount Gravatt now - with new seating to 40000? Why not have the opening ceremony there as well if so? Seems a bit of a dog's breakfast to me but these things usually come through all right in the end. Is the Gabba being used at all?

Of course, all this needs approval from the IOC apparently but can't see them kicking up a fuss.

Also, likely a new government this year - so expect more changes of direction - although running out of time.

that amount of money is not required & won't pass muster for a venue that now won't even be involved in the olympics , it will get some work done , some modernising , but not much else . Plus the Broncos will be there for a couple of years while Suncorp is being done up

Mt Gravatt , the QEII stadium is not where the opening ceremony should or will be under any circumstances , they want that in the centre of the city near the River .. Lang Park

A shambles looking for a disaster.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.
Rugby league, Australias most popular game in some of North Eastern Australia.

Magnificent decision & finally some common sense prevails.
3 Venues done for 3 billion instead of 1 for the same money

Suncorp
QLDs leading venue & home to its important sporting teams
with a 65 to 70K Suncorp , the QLD Govt can finally compete with NSW for the NRL GF ... just huge
the NRL wins too , with big $$ now for its GF, let the bidding begin.

QEII , 50K seat athletics stadium
GABBA , some lipstick & paint .. appropriate

Yeah - there’s a lot of talk this morning - a lot of commentators can’t see why they’d go for the Nathan stadium refit - a big waste of money - in a terrible area. Issue is, they’re still spending a lot on the Gabba and it will continue to be a drain as it will need some major coin post 2032 to keep it viable.

I wouldn’t go too much of Courier Mail - they are just anti Labour Govt - no matter what.

The general chat overall is “who wants these stupid games anyway - spend it elsewhere”…. In saying that, the report makes it apparently clear that the new stadium and precinct (hospitals, training facilities etc.) is required with or without Olympics.

Be interesting what the Liberals come out and say and do - with them likely to win the election. I’m a labour man myself but the new leader comes across as blithering and not leader like at all. Wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t tossed before the election. - unlikely at this stage but wouldn’t surprise me as can’t see them winning with him.

Now watch the master PVL & how he will use this new Suncorp to his & the NRL's advantage

QLD want the GF , they now have a bigger venue that can provide ticket revenue to match Accor & the QLD govt will trump up the cash

NSW obviously want it too ,
PVL to the NSW Govt ..... how much do you want it ?
badly mr PVL sir ..
Ok , then we will revisit the Stadium situation in Sydney , get the deal I had been promised done , & we will sign a long term deal instead of a year to year one.
