And so it begins: Year 3 of the womens mess.

Who knew the fabtastic AFLW was starting this weekend? I didn't until I happened to be in Bleakbourne this week and read the local bubble dwelling papers. Sure enough the back pages had some content of the unfortunately brutally panned ladies game.
Elsewhere the enthusiasm has been...….well...….unenthusiastic!!! Even in Bleakbourne it is largely underwhelming.
So here we go!!!! From this weekend we can check the tv ratings and 'crowds' of the ladies mess. What's the predictions??? Last year they had a catastrophic drop off in TV ratings. Will it continue? Will the mess bounce back?? Will the standard of play creep past under 10 boys F grade??
In the continued absence of the once great Wookie I will keep a close eye on the mess and will report in my usual objective, evidence based, common sense way.
How do the punters think the season will pan out???????

Week one will be ok for crowds & ratings
After that it's all downhill with no brakes

Looks like I'll have to give the run down of week one of the female fumbling for 2019.You would think one of the fumbling zealots here would do it. Maybe they're just too embarrassed by the mess.
OK: Week one crowds were down 36% on last year which was down from the year before. That's a massive drop off.
The Saturday TV ratings were about on par with last year which were down a whopping 65% on Fox and 35% FTA from 2017. The Sunday ratings were so low they didn't make the Fox cut off of 36k. On that basis I suspect the ratings were down. If anyone has come across the Sunday numbers let me know.
The standard of the game?? Last year the AFLW playing standard got trashed by hard core fumble fans, former players and sections of the media. So bad was it fumblehouse sent a directive out to the clubs to change the way they play to try and make the mess more attractive. New rules have also been put in place to assist the inept ladies game.
The result? The average number of goals kicked in round 1 last year per game was 8.75. This year it was 8.6. Thus I conclude the standard of play is as atrocious as last year. A quick perusal of AFL media sites confirms this with the fans again lampooning the ladies game.
Conclusion: An underwhelming start continuing the downward trend from last year.

I came across the game on saturday night, which i new was on
from the constant promotion from the cricket telecasts.
watched about 20 mins, and again.. its not for me..
Nothing has changed, i think the kicking has gotten worse,
especially lining up for goal.

I gotta admit AFL were smart in doing crowd entry free.
to get the media and people buzzing about atmosphere at games..
cause without it we would be seeing much much worse...
i cant imagen the day when Tickets are charged for, for entry to Ground.

You need to excuse the standard to a large degree given the sport is so new for women. I really think they need modified rules to make ball movement easier.
I have heard the number of AFL woman's clubs is increasing dramatically so IMO it's well worth the effort

It’s generating interest to attract the fans and sponsors! Everything new has to start somewhere!
The skill level is similar and will take a few years to get there!
If or when the nrlolw starts simpler things will happen as well

Oh dear .
We already have a women's comp .
It will be on again this year .
Just because it's not on now doesn't mean it's not happening l
So it's not if or when .

Christ, this is abysmal football. No spatial awareness or peripheral vision. I'd rather watch the grade 1's match at the end of an Auskick session. This is supposed to be the highest level women's football in Australia? #AFLWPiesDees

Seems like things aren't going to plan. I'm sure Gilty will muzzle the media as best he can.
I just feel sorry for the girls. They try hard. They seem like good people. But they're saddled with playing a rubbish sport. It's not their fault they look hopeless and stumble and bumble from one mess to the other. It's the game itself. It's rubbish.
I support the girls. Give 'em a break fumblers. It's the hard core fans attacking them. You can't make a silk purse out of a pigs ear. #supportthefemalefumblers #leavethegirlsalone .
