hmm, I dunno, cause 30% of your audience can only choose 1 game?

Yes we have some expansion teams with very small support, but these are additional teams that you dont even have. If you had 2 teams in perth and 2 in Melbourne you'd have some poor ratings too. Our top 15 clubs are easily as strong as yours
Pal, you don't seem to know what you're talking about!! Our fox ratings are for 15.5 teams v 18 & we still flog you. If we had more teams we would beat you by more ya dill!!!! Shhhheeessshhhhhh......this is becoming embarrassing!!!!!!!!
8 games played in isolation to 1. A short 2 hour telecast to 3. 16 hours on TV to 27.

These are factors you continually ignore. I wonder why

Fact is if the AFL get a similar sized audience for a 50% longer program the AFL is clearly more watched
Once again pal NO!!!!!! Shheeeesshhhhhh!!!!! The TV ratings are an AVERAGE over the length of the program. If the AVERAGE viewership is the same over a 2hr program & a 3hr program it cannot possibly mean, mathematically, more ppl have watched the 3 hr program. It just means the same number watched it slightly longer.

Geeeezzzz this is tiresome.

And for another stat: At this stage of the season in 2017 the AFL had 2 games on Fox rate less than 100k. This year they have had 16. If this continues it will have massive ramification for the next broadcast deal.

Maybe if we simplify it to a level of a Victorian 15 yr old 2nd grader .

1 million people watch show x over 2 hrs
1 million people watch show y over 3 hrs .

Show x has 1 million sets of eyeballs watching
Show y has 1 million sets of eyeballs watching .
Not 1.5 million
500 k sets of eyeballs didn't magically appear to watch .

Simple simple fact that you just don't get .

1. you're the one who began this entire "most watched" business. When 2 programs have the same audience the one that is watched for longer is the most watched. If the master chef gets 1m for 90 minutes it is more watched than the half hour news at 7pm with the same ratings. I'm just using your "most watched" term against you.

2. For a 3 hour program to get the same average ratings as a 2 hour program the peak audience MUST. Every program has viewers that dont watch the entire program. Some people watch until another program begins. Some have other commitments. Some will turn off if the game is decided. All these effect a longer telecast far greater than a shorter one.

3. You example of 1m for 2 hour game and 1m for a 3 hour game is exactly what I am talking about. If the same 1m watch 6 hours of NRL they will be counted 3 times, whereas if they watch 6 hours of AFL they will only be counted twice. This is despite watching EXACTLY the same amount of each sport. This is completely msileading!

4. Extending on from the previous point, AFL fans need to watch 24 hours of AFL to be counted the same as an NRL fan watching 16 hours. 24 hours of sport in a single weekend is just unrealistic. Furthermore, AFL fans cant do it even if they tried because of the overlap in games. The most we can watch is around 18 hours, but then we are only counted 6 times.

It is no where near as simple as 1 game v another when using cumulative ratings as a measure of popularity

So you think this has no relevance at all?:
If 1m watch 6 hours of NRL they will be counted 3 times, whereas if they watch 6 hours of AFL they will only be counted twice. This is despite watching EXACTLY the same amount of each sport

That's RL fans watching 3 different games ..with most likely well over half would be different viewers
..you know watching their team play .
If it's Pen v Cronulla .i wouldn't watch ..little interest
Cows v whoever ..yes
Warriors v Melb ..prob watch some ...

You can't really be this stupid

It's not the same eyeballs watching 6hrs .
It's who is watching the game

FFS ..no wonder Terry gets so frustrated .

You honestly think half the audience would be their own fans?

If the cowboys played the storm on Friday night they would rate near 1m. Yet Melbourne may rate 50k and regional FNQ about 150k at most. That leaves 800k neutral supporters who want to watch the contest but dont support either club.

What a genius you are!

Pretty sure they do. The main point in this years ratings is that the AFL, Aleague & Super Rugby have all dropped in ratings by 15-20% - which is huge. In the case of the AFL it is 100k's viewers per week.

At the same time the NRL has at least stayed solid or maybe risen a small amount. Ppl in the AFL & other codes say their drop is due to viewers watching on laptops, apps, streaming etc. This no doubt accounts for some of their drop off. But it also means many ppl must also be watching the NRL by these alternative methods as well.

As such, in real terms, the NRL has undoubtedly had a big rise in viewership. I would suggest around the 10% mark. And the NZ ratings have also risen a massive 22%. Whatever way you slice it or dice it the NRL is the most watched sport in Australia by a very large margin.

And by the way: I've given up on lllolller. The poor bugger is living in complete and utter denial. But at least he's in there throwin' 'em for his embattled code - unlike the rest of his mates who have deserted the battlefield.

yes true point, even with the changing landscape of Tv media and streaming
NRL tv figures are still on the up..

that is a great way to look at it..

wish we could get those NZ Numbers 22% lift is brilliant

On the up? Latest figures have the NRLs ratings slightly in decline overall

Wookies got it slightly up & the NRL firm had it slightly down. And if you read & understood what I said previously you would understand we are undoubtedly on the rise by quite a margin.

I took into account 0.4% drop in Australia
but 22% up in New Zealand>>

so overall it is up>>
but even better to know, that all codes are down 10-20% and NRL is holding Strong.

It's round 10 in the AFL. Last year it was the 3rd highest rating round of the year with over 5.1M viewers. I will keep an eye on this years numbers but I suspect they won't get anywhere near 5M.

Last year they got nearly 1.9M on Fox at an average just over 207k. This year they have had 16 games rate less than 100k so it looks like a matter of how many 100k's less they'll get again this week.
