Western Sydney's mass exodus from RL

Post by NlolRL »

THE NRL is planning an emergency $100 million rescue strategy to stop the mass exodus of junior players in western Sydney that is threatening the code’s future. Alarming statistics show registration numbers have plummeted as much as 15 per cent in an area that was once the game’s heartland. One official told The Sunday Telegraph: “At this rate our game will be dead in 10 years.”

At the same time Australian rules football numbers in Sydney’s west are climbing at a rate of 15 per cent on the back of the code’s multimillion-dollar grassroots blitz and the emergence of the GWS Giants as the hottest team in the AFL and favourites to win this year’s premiership.

The most alarming statistic is that first-time participant registrations are down by 20 per cent.

Australian rules appears to be the biggest threat to rugby league in Sydney’s west. Participation continues to rise across NSW with double-digit growth in 2016 and a strong start to the 2017 season.

Since 2010 and the introduction of GWS, overall local registrations in Australian rules have more than doubled.

gould is only defending his own club though.

and while i agree with his definition of what really is western sydney (everything from liverpool to campbelltown and then blacktown to penrith), places like parramatta, bankstown, ryde and canterbury which were "westie" suburbs 25 years ago but are now already part of or becoming closer to central sydney/inner west....participation rates in those areas are all down

In the Penrith Junior League, we are not witnessing anywhere near the decline in participation figures being reported for other areas.

How long has AFL been talking about taking over Western Sydney. They were talking crowds like Collingwood for GWS and having to move to ANZ once. All hot air and bullshit. And that field can't even get used for AFL once it's renovated.

Then they say it is a 20 year plan when the Wanderers keep embarrassing them with more fans. Mass increases in Austag football. That is basically Rugby League fans that don't like being tackled anyway.

At the end of the day Sydney has 9 NRL clubs. AFL has 2 clubs with one playing half their games in another city. Pretty comical.

AFL has already slashed their promotion budget in NSW this year by over a million dollars. 1.5 million to 500,000. Which the fumblers all go quiet about every time I mention it.
