beats me how i never noticed this before - from the AFLs 2016 Annual Report

2016 Season AFL Ratings
The cumulative gross national audience during the home and away season exceeded 103 million (103,697,176), up from 102.7 million (102,722,355) in 2015.
The gross cumulative audience for the 2016 Toyota AFL Finals Series was 18,368,305. This marks an increase of 10.7 per cent on the total national viewership for the 2015 Toyota AFL Finals Series (16,588,991) and makes it the highest gross cumulative audience for an AFL Finals Series in AFL/VFL history.
This would put the total at 122,065,481. for 2016.

Doesnt include preseason etc

2016 NRL Ratings - from the NRL 2016 Annual Report

Premiership Cumulative Total - 112,061,705. + Origin (11,361,471) = 123,423,176

Doesnt include 4 nations, ANZAC tests etc.

Wow. That's great Woooksie!!! However I do question TV ratings these days since......well.......when you questioned them the other day lolololololololololololololololololololololol. I mean I think they're very inaccurate.

Case in point: last Wednesday the Renegades played the Sixers in the BBL. One team from Melbourne & one from Sydney. The game was on FTA only. Should be a very fair comparison. Melbourne rated 568k for the 2 sessions whilst Sydney only rated 303k.

That's a massive difference and it is replicated night after night in almost very TV program in the top 20 - Melbourne rates far more than Sydney. Why is this Woooksie??

My theory is the ratings boxes are placed in different demographic areas in each city and falsely gives Melbourne bigger numbers. Either that or more people watch TV in Melbourne than Sydney. Which is very plausible considering what a stinking hell hole Melbourne is lololololololololoololol.

What's your theory Wookie??

That could be true Wookie but it is interesting/strange that Melbourne FTA TV out-rates Sydney night after night - sometimes by huge margins with the same programs & schedules. I've heard it said it is because Sydney has more Fox subscriptions however that can't explain BBL or the huge differences that occur regularly - particularly as Sydney's population is about 400k more than Melbourne.

I would love to know this reason also>>>

and it is not just a recent event of viewing>> its been happening ever since I started looking up tv figures / reports
in 2007 (Melbourne has always been in front by a fair margin)

It has to be one of two reasons...

1. Tv rating boxes
2. Melbourne viewers just watch a hell of a lot more tv programs

cannot think of anything else..

It's all a bit odd Leeroy. A few people have offered up some theories but no one really seems to know why. It doesn't just happen to sports telecasts either - the nightly news in Melbourne easily out rates the Sydney equivalent night after night.

Some RL folk say it must be faulty ratings boxes or locations that distort the number. But of course they get shouted down by the fumbling brigade who refuse to concede anything to RL.

Has anyone noticed the Mediaweek ratings over the past month? They haven't been giving a breakdown, just a Metro and a total figure.

given millions of advertising dollars are based on ratings dont you think OZTAM would have allowed for faulty or incorrectly allocated boxes?

per population Sydney does poorly compared to most cities in Aus. Clearly people in Sydney dont watch that much TV in comparison
