Port Adelaide, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Richmond, Carlton, Sydney and the Western Bulldogs received a combined $7.1 million in handouts from the AFL last season and after the signing of a new television rights deal, it is believed this amount will increase.

Re: Solution to NRL's current crisis
They get money from the afl for memberships, gate receipts, merchandise etc that involve those particular clubs I believe. For example if you are an afl member your team receives a proportion of your afl membership subscription.cooee wrote:So some clubs don't get any money from the on a yearly basis AFL?
I would not call these handouts.

So the storm only receive funds in a similar manner?cooee wrote:Well then I can safely say that no NRL club receives handouts from the NRL.
Unlike the AFL.

The Storm are privately owned, their owners put money into the club not the NRL. Outside of the yearly club grants that all clubs get they get no extra money from the NRL.

Ahhh, I see the difference. I wonder how the storm would go if they weren't owned by news limited?cooee wrote:The Storm are privately owned, their owners put money into the club not the NRL. Outside of the yearly club grants that all clubs get they get no extra money from the NRL.

They are not looking for handouts but increases in the yearly club grants from NRL revenues.Xman wrote:http://www.theroar.com.au/2011/10/25/nr ... ays-chalk/

Just like payments to the clubs from the AFL.

Payments to clubs
The AFL makes a number of distributions and payments
to AFL clubs. These payments included the following in 2010:
» A base distribution to all clubs that totalled $94.9 million,
an increase of $4.1 million on 2009.
» A bonus distribution of $1.2 million to all clubs from
the broadcast rights proceeds.

The Sharks are still without a major sponsor and can't even afford to put on a chief executive, while many clubs are overly reliant on leagues club grants just to survive.
"It's an increasingly competitive market and their traditional funding models through leagues clubs are under pressure," Gallop said.
"A good broadcasting deal will alleviate a lot of pressure on them and others.
"My view has been for a while that we wait until 2015 and allow our existing 16 clubs and players to share in the benefits of the next TV deal for at least a couple of years."

Re: Solution to NRL's current crisis
Cooee, comparing AFL finances in this manner to NRL is like comparing apples to oranges. NONE of the AFL clubs are privately owned. Sydney tried it through Geoff Edelsten and it stiffed. I believe that all NRL clubs are privately owned. This is why NRL clubs are less likely to ask for handouts unless they are in real trouble, and that doesn't take much. The clubs will get nothing from the next NRL TV deal unless they are involved in the negotiations. In the AFL on the other hand the clubs get plenty for TV deals because that's the way the AFL is run. All AFL competitions are run the same way even down to the grass roots. The controlling body has a share of responsibility for the clubs, and that's something that Gallop is against and he is wrong in that thinking.
Now maybe the NRL is changing with this independent commission. The question is will the clubs co-operate? Could be interesting!
