Re: Looks like an Australian Super Rugby club could be getting the cut.
There just isn't enough depth in Australian rugby to sustain 5 teams at super rugby level.
its one of the toughest rugby comps in the world both physically and mentally. Having to play footy one night then on the plane to japan/Singapore, South Africa, Argentina or nz the next day.
Need to restart and focus on grassroots to try and draw more youngsters.
Most likely they will kick out the kings and one of the 2 Australian teams or they will do something similar to the nz domestic comp and have two divisions with relegation and promotion.

Re: Looks like an Australian Super Rugby club could be getting the cut.
The whole Super rugby comp needs blowing up and starting again. I'd rather keep all 5 Aus teams and have a 10 team home and away comp with the Kiwi's and then bring the best SA teams in at the end to have a super championship finish.
Rugby is more entrenched in Aus than many think, particularly the fumblers, but silly Billy and the ARU need to move quickly to stem the tide and then slowly rebuild.

Wouldnt it be better to split from NZ and SA and bring in 2 more QLD sides, 2 more NSW sides and a SA side. Play at smaller venues and build following?

Re: Looks like an Australian Super Rugby club could be getting the cut.
A second team from nsw and qld would not have solved anything other than dilute the already small player pool.
What I think should have happened was the NRC being introduce before the other two teams came in to build depth at a high level. That's why they struggle there wasn't a second tier comp to brigde the gap between amateur club rugby and super rugby. Something the both SA and NZ have.

Re: Looks like an Australian Super Rugby club could be getting the cut.
very true
THE SA LEAGUE have there very popular Currie Cup
while N.Z have the Mitre10 Cup
NSW's Shute Shield and QLD premier rugby comps are not even close to these comps.
Surprised Rugby Union did not change this after there win fall after the 2003 World cup $$$
pumping it into State leagues improving state comps.
NRC WAS 12 YEARS TO LATE
Be interesting to see who they PUNT out of the 3
BRUMBIES FORCE REBELS
SOUTH AFRICA
KINGS ARE DEF GONE

They were very amateur in their approach to running the game. Rather than pump a heap of money into grass roots and development they wanted an extras super team in the force.
Most likely the force will get the chop as the rebels are privately backed so aren’t costing the ARU a cent.

Well at least some decent news with world rugby finalising a 12 year globe calendar which will see super rugby being able to play right through to the end & see more tier 1 & tier 2 nations play each other

Australian Rugby should align itself with N.Z Rugby
and build a comp between the two..
At least this gets rid of bad time zones and travelling costs..
But it all comes down to Money..

Be interesting to see what the Cut would be,
if 2/3 teams are cut from the Super Rugby Comp..
what kind of financial hit would occur...

I think it is sad for the sport to be cutting teams. If the ACT Brumbies get the boot... I wonder if AFL or the A League will look more seriously at a permanent team in Canberra.
