IR in China

Post by cos789 »

Gaelic football and Aussie rules are about evenly matched as developing codes in Asia, and there have been regular compromise or International Rules matches between Gaelic and Aussie Rules clubs in Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. If anything Gaelic football has taken a bit of a lead in recent years, despite there being less Irish than Aussie expats in the region.Another website ruined by wookie features

IR in Denmark

Post by cos789 »

International Rules came to Denmark for the first time on the 16th April 2005 with a match between the North Copenhagen Barracudas and the Copenhagen GAA club. Copenhagen GAA are a club of the increasingly organised European GAA.
Nice try Cos.

IR in Hong Kong

Post by cos789 »

The Hong Kong Dragons, reigning Asian Australian Rules champions, entered two teams in last week's Asian Gaelic Football 7's Championship which is straight Gaelic football and won the "B" Cup. Gaelic football in Asia is growing strongly on the back of this annual competition and last year had the patronage of the President of the Irish Republic, Mary McAleese. There are often Aussie footy players in the teams. It has also become tradition to play an "Australia" v "Ireland" International Rules match as curtain-raiser for the final. The Dragons are featured on the Asian Gaelic Games website.

Fergal Power of the Hong Kong GAA says: "Typically we play the Aussies (HK Dragons) about 3 times a year, but will probably increase that. The Aussies will be entering two teams in our Asian Championships. They are incidentally the current Asian Australian Rules Champions. Over the years, the Aussies won the first couple of tests, then we came back with a much faster running game, and staying unbeaten for a couple of years, but the Aussies have now started playing a similar game, and well and truly trounced us in March (although it was the day after St Pats Day). We've actually lost a few players to Aussie Rules and vice versa, but we support each other in terms of that we're similar sports and make sure to plan events / championships so that they dont clash - so there is a good degree of cooperation. We will be playing a compromise rules game as a warm up game to January's All Star Match in HK." The All Stars are the GAA's version of the All-Australian team and play the previous year's All-Stars in an annual match that in recent year's has come to be played abroad. The game in January will futher popularise Gaelic football in Hong Kong.Another website ruined by wookie features

Re: IR in Singapore

Post by cos789 »

In Singapore there is also a very close link between Aussie Rules and Gaelic, as Stephen Keane, chairman of the Singapore Gaelic Lions explains: "We have a very close relationship between the Gaelic Lions and the Australian Football Club (the Wombats) here in Singapore. Both clubs are very strong individually and we have played several compromise games in the past, stretching back to around 98 / 99 and running through to the present day. Also, a few of our Irish players also play with the Wombats and a lot of them also try their hand at Irish football. We have always had a number of Aussies on the Gaelic team for our Asian Gaelic Games and presently have about 6 that are involved. Last year, the Gaelic Team assisted China in their endeavors to field a team in the Asian Footy tournament that was held here in Singapore with over half of the China team being made up of Singapore Gaelic Lions."Another website ruined by wookie features

IR in Japan

Post by cos789 »

Across the sea in Tokyo the collaboration between the codes is no different. The Japan GAA fielded half the players to team up with Box Hill in the recent Narita Cup match against the Japan national Aussie Rules team the Samurais (see the Japan GAA article and the Tokyo Goannas article). Various compromise rules game have been played over the years, the most recent being St Pat's day 2004 where Gaelic teams from Tokyo and Osaka teamed up as "Japan Irish" in the main event of the day, the Ned Kelly Cup, an Aussie Rules/Gaelic (rules swap per quarter) game against the Another website ruined by wookie features

IR in Germany

Post by cos789 »

In Germany there are a handfull of GAA and Aussie Rules clubs and a consistent report that there were Compromise rules matches played in the early 90s in Dusseldorf, but records of those games seem to have been lost with the comings and goings of early teams. Now the Gaelic and Aussie Rules clubs have more stability and it is in Munich where there has been a version of International Rules played on and off for the past 7 years.Another website ruined by wookie features

IR in New York

Post by cos789 »

There is no doubt that both Gaelic football and Aussie Rules are growing in North America. Gaelic football has been established much longer in America, and with Australian footy growing fast, opportunities exist for the sports to work together. The New York football scene is a great example of what might be achieved.
The local NY Championships in Gaelic football and hurling are keenly contested. In recent years New York (wearing a jersey that incorporates a symbol of the NY Fire Department, many of whose fire fighters, some with strong links to the GAA, perished in the twin towers) have competed in the All Ireland Football Championship, though are yet to progress past the first round. This year's North American GAA finals (for teams outside the stronghold of New York) were the biggest yet, held in Denver with 58 adult teams and over 30 junior level games. The teams that played had often won the right in preliminary rounds in their home cities. There was also a North American junior championships held in NY in July, where the large presence of anglo, hispanic and continental names apart from the usual O'Brien's and O'Leary's was noted, as Gaelic football gradually moves into the mainstream of American life.

The growth of Australian Rules footy in North America has been well canvassed on worldfootynews.com, and is increasingly driven by locals rather than expats. This year's nationals, like their Gaelic counterparts, have attracted a large number of teams, as well as AFL heavyweights Kevin Sheedy and General Manager of Game Development, David Matthews.Another website ruined by wookie features

IR in Vancouver

Post by cos789 »

Versions of Compromise/International Rules matches go back to 1967 with Harry Beitzel's Australian team, "the Galahs", touring Ireland. But at the real grassroots level it is possibly Vancouver in British Columbia that held the first international/compromise rules game. As John O'Flynn of the Vancouver Harps says:

"Our Gaelic Club has been active for 30 years and we have played the Vancouver Cougars and the Calgary Kangaroos in various Gaelic Football tournaments in the last number of years. Our first experience with Aussie Rules was in the late 70's with a local club. A number of Aussies have played with us over the years and we have had a few of our own play with the Vancouver Cougars". The Harps and the Cougars have played an annual St Pat's Day IR game for the past 3 seasons.Another website ruined by wookie features

IR in Calgary

Post by cos789 »

"The Calgary Chieftains and Calgary Kangaroos have developed a fantastic, mutually beneficial relationship that started out with the Aussies entering the local Gaelic Football tournament in June 2003, and was followed up by 2 compromise rules games later that Fall".

The first "Test" was won by the Chieftains: 3-8-17 (59) to 2-6-13 (43); the Kangaroos stormed back finding the net in the second: 8-14-12 (108) to 4-2-12 (42). A great write up can be found on the Chieftains' website and concludes with comments that could apply to a Test at Croke Pk, Subiaco or the MCG: "This is going to be a great game, just as soon as each of the teams realize what they are doing. Our styles are contrasting in so many ways. The Kangaroos play the ball long & accurately, finding their high-fielding players and letting the ball do the work. The Chieftains, while still getting used to the tackle law, get good ground and possession by moving the ball in short intricate passing moves. Plans are afoot to create a more formal Compromised rules series in the coming season".

Also in Calgary, there are matches played with the format of Australian football rules and ball for a half, Gaelic rules and ball for a half, as well as participation in each codes tournaments, in what is a rich tradition of interaction.Another website ruined by wookie features

IR in Denver

Post by cos789 »

We'll start in Denver, Colorado, home of what seems the longest and best IR rivalry outside elite AFL-GAA, involving the Denver Bulldogs and Denver Gaels. Both clubs, faced with the tyranny of distance (the Gaels travel 1,000 miles to Chicago to compete), have for 7 years played IR matches. Despite this the clubs are strong contenders in the NAGAA and the USAFL both winning national titles in recent years, and so in a sense their IR matches could be called the clash of champions.Another website ruined by wookie features
