Should the Suns play in Darwin/NT

Post by Fred »

A little pet peeve of mine is the Suns, who are trying to build on their following and support in a non-traditional market, playing games in Northern Territory. I just don't get this - as to why the AFL would do this. The more games at home the better I feel and this promotional part of the season should be left to other, more established, teams to take on. We had north Melbourne, who are struggling on and off the field, play up there - which I am thinking was their home game for which they would be compensated for, and this week Geelong - which i believe is the Suns' home game. I have also been against playing home games in Cairns (or China for that matter) - the more games played at home the better. On that note, I would think now that Tassie is out of the picture for North Melbourne and Hawthorn that they may be the ones that sell games to the Northern Territory - one for Darwin and 1 for Alice Springs. Thoughts?

The only comparison the NRL has is the Melbourne Storm ( newish team in non traditional area) & rarely they take home games away from Melb if ever

its all about $$
the Suns lose money ( heaps) as an operation as do GWS , they both bleed it

the AFL owns them both & need to recoup some of these staggering losses & the NT & ACT Govt pay good money to host these teams

Just another example of AFL expansion teams failing as a result of the AFL's ego

I agree re: recouping money - but think this is short sighted. The Suns are tracking okay on the gold coast considering the challenges the gold coast market provide for many sporting teams. They do not seem to be anywhere near the issues the Giants have. By playing games at home when they should be helps build on the gains, I feel, that the Suns have made - taking them away from their maket base only serves to deminish these gains I feel. Seems stupid.

the gains aren't covering the losses , the side isn't impacting enough to stop them having to chase money in other markets
13 years on & they still aren't paying their way

Would be interesting to see how much they are getting over and above what the AFL give all teams (as part of their share of revenue). Even more reason they should be playing at home I say - how do you build a brand in an area when they play away when they should be at home. Momentum is often lost for me - get used to going to regular home games then there is not a game for a few weeks. Annoys me.

that article there lists them as receiving the largest distribution in the league last year
a staggering 33.114 Million , more then GWS at 32.494 Million then the Lions with 27.727 Mill
