Can't get a run

Post by Scorger Man »

The Moree Bomerangs Rugby League club have been without a competition to play in for the last 8 years and it's an absolute joke. Their regional group, group 19 kicked them out of the comp in 1998 due to complaint of unfair refereeing in a match in Glen Innes. The Rangs didn't return to the field in the second half of the match which subsequently kicked out of the comp. Each year they apply to rejoin the comp but have been knocked back. They have also tried to join the neighbouring group 4 competition many times but have been knocked back also due to "travel costs" for teams to travel to Moree. The Rangs had offered to pay for travel costs for competing teams but still they were denied. People can sit around and bitch and whinge about issues surrounding towns with high Indigenous populations in regards to unemployment, alcohol and drug abuse but in the same breath deny young Indigenous players the chance to get out of the so called "rutt" to excel in sports and be role models for generations to come. Their soft cock comps if groups are using travel costs(which have been offered to pay for) and excuses from 8 to 9 years ago if they dont want some real competition. I hope their happy with the fact that they go to sleep at night well aware that they aren't playing the best in the area

Looks like Moree are playing in their own league now with trials last weekend. If the Aboriginal League is a success it surely wont be good for the CRL and NSWRL. Oh well they left teams like Moree and the organisers of the league no other choice.

THE FIRST trial matches of the new Aboriginal Nations Super League in Moree over the weekend have been hailed as a success by the NARL chair Michael Anderson.

The Narwan Eels, Moree Boomerangs, Mission Jets and Toomelah Tigers all took to the field at Burt Jovanovich Oval.

The big match for the day was the Boomerangs v Eels fixture which the Eels won 44-30.

In a hard-hitting affair Moree got up early leading 6-nil, 10-6 and 14-12 before Narwan got into their stride and pushed ahead 22-14 by halftime.

The Eels kept the points coming in the second half and pushed in front 38-20 before Moree pulled themselves back into the game to trail 38-30 before the Eels sealed the deal 44-30.

John Roberts, Travis Cook and Garry Quinlan led by example on the field.

"I am ecstatic at the level of enthusiasm demonstrated during our first trial matches at Moree over the weekend," Anderson said.

"Our analysis in terms of the social implications gave the organisation a clean slate, as there were no negative incidents stemming from the weekend football."

This weekend four games will be played at Lightning Ridge.

I think it's a great plan as the NARL competition will be a show case of talent. If it's successful you'll see non Aboriginal players doing all they can to get into the comp if they want to challenge themselves. Anderson has already express that people of all races can play in the comp so if they want to play the best in regional footy then there is no better comp to play in. It's sad in some respect that it has come to this but to deny teams to play in their local comp, they leave no other option. You watch the talent scouts hoard to these games and why wouldn't they??

Doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose of calling it the National Aboriginal Rugby League if you have non-Aboriginal players? Why not just call it another name without the reference to Aboriginal in the title?

I think it's a sign of open mindedness that a competition set up by Indigenous people are willing to include non Indigenous people in their competition. If it was the case that it shouldn't be called National Aboriginal Rugby League then group 19 should change their name to "Group 19 minus the Moree Bomerangs" as the rangs are encompassed in the group 19 area.
