Sydney FC has appointed German World Cup winner Pierre Littbarski as the club’s inaugural head coach for the Hyundai A-League.

Littbarski is the only player to play in three consecutive World Cups Finals, when he represented Germany at the 1982, 1986 and 1990 World Cup Finals. He played in the 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals when Germany fell one game short of football’s Holy Grail but he was a member of the team that defeated Argentina to win the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

During his playing days, Littbarski was taught by some of the biggest names in world football with Franz Beckenbauer and Berti Vogts at International level and Christoph Daum during his successful club career at FC Cologne.

As a coach he has been plying his trade in Japan and Germany with Littbarski involved in the launch of the hugely successful Japanese J-League at JEF United in the debut season. He has most recently coached Yokohama in the Japanese second division and he also holds a EUFA coaching badge.

The 44-year-old arrived in Sydney last night to complete the two-year deal and will take the reins when Sydney FC starts official pre-season training on Monday at Aussie Stadium.

Sydney FC Chief Executive Officer Andy Harper said the decision to hire Littbarski signified the start of the serious business of training for the start of the Hyundai A-League.

“Pierre Littbarski is one of the best midfielders of his era and his achievements as a player with the German National Team and in the Bundesliga are unquestionable,â€
