i) it's early preseason
ii) most teams are not playing their stars, mostly kids
iii) the games are on 7mate
iv) the format is in its infancy. T20 was bagged when it first came out

Thicknecks having their little rants, only proving that Allianz stadium along with other rectangle stadiums in this country having low crowd numbers is nothing new.

True why i agree in someway..
The NRL had the 9's
Which was in NZ and was sucess regards to crowds
200k in viewership on FOX from 9am in the morning throughout the day .
Even knowing it is Feb and is a preseason fixture
The AFL would be in panic mode with these figures..
There pretty pathetic for a hyped pre season comp

Re: Swans vs Lions AFLX Sydney flop
why would they panic about the success of an experimental format played in off season with fringe players?leeroy*NRL* wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2018 2:52 pmNlolRL wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2018 2:23 pmtrue, but understandable given:leeroy*NRL* wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2018 11:51 amSaturday #AFLX #7TWO 71k (Syd 11k Mek 26k Bri 10k Ade 14k Per 10k)

you guys are placing way too much weight on anyone's opinion of AFLX. If this is the only year it is played no one would care one iota

Re: Swans vs Lions AFLX Sydney flop
Because no code wants to fail at anything they set out to do.. this launch of this new concept does not come cheap.. the planning involved and time spent.
The AFL would of wanted a big start to the comp..
This has now created doubt..
Again the 9's in the NRL had fringe players also involved.. alot of players were not even 1st graders.
The big bash was a sucess from the get go
Nrl's 9's
Unions 7's
Afl x however

Re: Swans vs Lions AFLX Sydney flop
big bash came after the success of other t20 tornaments around the world so it was an established format. AFLX is nothing more than an experiment. Sure, they'd have hoped for a better reception, but you cant force success. If people dont like the format they wont follow itleeroy*NRL* wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2018 3:12 pmBecause no code wants to fail at anything they set out to do.. this launch of this new concept does not come cheap.. the planning involved and time spent.

Re: Swans vs Lions AFLX Sydney flop
I dont think its as dire as that Leeroy. The AFL will do their due diligence they will change format, scheduling etc even venue. IMO taking it to Blacktown or Drmmoyne may have had the same crowd but delivered a better result. Even a suburban RL ground would maybe given a better result. But again were looking at only one of 3 tournament's. Overall the AFL is happy apparently, unlike RL where there is a similarity (in concept) between their 9's and RU 7's AFL people are not very familiar with these sort of concepts, in time it will be a hit.leeroy*NRL* wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2018 3:12 pmBecause no code wants to fail at anything they set out to do.. this launch of this new concept does not come cheap.. the planning involved and time spent.

AFLX crowds exceeded expectations, says league
By Daniel Cherny
18 February 2018 — 4:54pm
AFLX project manager David Stevenson has labelled the first public taste of the concept a “great success”, suggesting that crowds slightly exceeded the league’s expectations.
While Stevenson noted there had been mixed views from clubs about the three carnivals held in recent days, he insisted AFLX had a strong future, even if some tinkering to the format is likely.
The three tournaments drew a combined crowd of 42,730 across Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday. More than 22,500 attended the Melbourne event, featuring six Victorian clubs, at Etihad Stadium on Friday night, with just over 10,253 coming through the gates at Adelaide’s Hindmarsh Stadium on Thursday night, and 9,892 counted for Saturday’s staging at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium.
The Brisbane Lions won the final AFLX grand final on Saturday.

Television ratings were similarly modest by AFL standards, with the three events drawing an average five-city metro audience of 122,333 on Channel Seven’s secondary channels, up against the Winter Olympics on Channel Seven itself, and an average of 75,667 on Fox Footy.
The biggest TV audience came on Thursday night, when 171,000 watched across the five metro cities on 7Two, and 82,000 tuned in on Foxtel.
Speaking on Sunday, Stevenson said the series would get a tick overall.
“We feel really positive about it,” Stevenson told The Age.
“When you look through the view of strong crowds, really good player feedback, good ratings, overall experience for the fans, we felt like it was a great success.”
While the stadiums in Melbourne and Sydney were a long way short of capacity, he said the crowds had overall been pleasing.
“A little bit above where we expected,” Stevenson said.
“Particularly in Melbourne we thought 20,000 might be a good number, but we had [22,585]. So that was great.
“Across the board for a new concept ... we feel really good about it.”
With the AFL excited by the perceived opportunities provided by AFLX - a seven-a-side game played on a rectangular field - to grow the game overseas, Stevenson said the league would conduct a review into the first instalment of the format, listening to feedback from players, clubs and fans.
He said he was pleased with the high scoring across the board, and thought the games were generally entertaining, quick and provided a good workout for players, but would look at trying to get more high marking and possibly more contested football into the concept.
Stevenson added that he was not perturbed by the generally weak squads clubs chose to field, noting that preseason football would always lead to clubs picking sides of varying strength.
Still, he suggested that clubs weren’t universally glowing in their endorsements of the game.
“Player feedback has been very strong. Clubs have been a little mixed based on where they are in their program,” Stevenson said.
“They’re interested to see what are the opportunities.
“[There’s] certainly some things we want to do differently, we’ve learnt from along the way, but we’re feeling it could be a great opportunity for us to grow our game.
“People are trying to work out how much will AFLX build into their regular season preparation. Obviously there’s some different rules.”
Stevenson refuted suggestions AFLX’s introduction had cannibalised AFLW, flagging the prospect that AFLX could be played by women in the near future.
The two AFLW games on Saturday drew TV audiences relatively in similar numbers on Fox Footy to Saturday's AFLX audience on Fox, with 54,000 tuning in to watch Adelaide beat the Western Bulldogs, and 81,000 watching the Brisbane Lions' victory against Carlton.
Stevenson said no further AFLX tournaments were planned this year, although left the door ajar for former players to participate in future editions.

The concept is not for the average footy punter, it is for OS markets and 8 year olds who will grow up with it and embrace it.. Personally i wasnt fussed with it but i dont like BBL or 9's or RU 7's.leeroy*NRL* wrote: ↑Mon Feb 19, 2018 10:03 amof course the AFL will down play the disappointment>>

Re: Swans vs Lions AFLX Sydney flop
Unlike AFL, Cricket - Union - League are already popular overseas. So its not that big a stretch for shortened versions of the game to be popular overseas. AFL has never been popular anywhere but in Australia's Southern states. And AFLX has ensured that it remains that way. Gilligan wont be pleased.
Rugby League, the dominant force in Australian sport!
