AFL China match would have to be the sporting flop of the year.

Which is the best football code? Here you can have it out with other football fans.

We're still waiting for the Chinese ratings number that was predicted to be the most people in history to ever watch an AFL game. As that much hyped announcement has never come we can assume it flopped on Chinese TV.

Financially the event broke even. So after a massive upheaval to get two teams over there, get the ground up to scratch and all the infrastructure in place they made exactly $0.00. I call that a flop.

They announced a sell out crowd before the game. Unfortunately it looked half full and it was a case of spot the Chinaman in the crowd. The reasoning was that fumblehouse gave away thousands of freebies to the locals but they stayed at home and played mah-jong instead. That's a flop.

The only up-side is the potential for the future. Maybe more Chinese sponsors will come on board. Maybe more Chinese will watch on TV. Maybe more Chinese will actually use their freebies and turn up to the ground. Maybe my aunty is my uncle.

I predict they will play one or two more games there and will then be frog marched out of town like they were in NZ. You read it here first!
the game was a success as the AFL got exposure in china, clubs and the league made money! anyway the ratings turn out you fruitloops will cry they are fudged!

a one off game will never get the whole attention of a nation and have them suddenly change from their favourite sports

all you have to do is look at your own shitty little code internationally! union is a world beater then old little league :(/

lol at this thread.

the game was about 2 things -
- getting sponsorship and exposure for the Port Adelaide football club brand - which by all accounts they did.
- continuing a long term Port Adelaide strategy begun in 2012

Anyone who thinks it was about the crowds and ratings in this match is an idiot and should be treated as such.
Seriously wookie what company in China would want to sponsor a game that nobody in their country cares about.

If you were a wealthy Chinese businessman, would you waste your money on a game played in a half empty third world stadium that only Aussies really turned up to watch.

I am pretty sure they would choose a sporting club giant like Manchester United before some unusual game they don't understand which is only played in Australia.

This article flies in the face of your comments above Wookie.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/p ... yydu1.html

It appears the strategy is to have a game of the ladies mess plus mens pre-season, build junior participation and build crowds and ratings.

What I found very interesting is that the Port boss said this, "Thomas said there had been five million television viewers in China but this would increase next year with changes made."

Now I have checked the Port website and I haven't seen this figure mentioned anywhere. No one from fumblehouse has mentioned it. I would be 100% sure that if this figure was correct and verifiable fumblehouse would be trumpeting it from the rooftops.

The fact that Keith Thomas mentioned this figure when he was in China probably tells the story - no one there questioned it. If he stated it here people would rightly be asking, how do you know? Where did you get the number from? Show me the TV station stats that prove it. I call BS.
