New York in line for rugby league team

Ambitious plans have been unveiled for a New York rugby league team to follow Toronto into the English game.
A business plan has been submitted to the Rugby Football League and organisers, who say they have the backing of wealthy benefactors and hope to get the go-ahead in time to enter the competition in 2019.

Co-founder Tom Scott told a media briefing in Leeds that, like Toronto, the New York club would not seek any central funding and have already secured $US10 million ($A12.64m) in investment.

Organisers say playing in the summer would avoid a direct clash with the NFL and they are confident of building a fan base of 10,000 in the first year, doubling the figure within three years to bring it on a par with the New York Red Bulls soccer team.
The team would be based at a training complex in Warwick, an hour's drive from New York City, and play at the 25,000-seat Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, a 20-minute train ride from the World Trade Centre.

Increadible news, so now we have Toronto Wolfpack, a new team in it's way in New York.
And a second Canadian Rugby League team in the pipeline too according to Eric Perez.

AFL meanwhile keeps embassing itself with overseas exhibition matches that only a few expats turn up to.

if they do what toronto has done they will do well. Not sure playing in a 25k stadium is a good idea though if they are targeting only 10k per game. Should do what toronto have done and starts small then work their way up

It has a long way to go. But I really like Eric Perez vision.

He has the long term goal of starting up a professional league with North American teams beig part of the superleague consortium.

Funny how all the AFL fans have been dead quiet about this. As both Union & League keep becoming more international.

Again... we have no comment because Australian Rules is a domestic game played in Australia. What would you like an Aussie Rules person to say ? That union and league are mote international ??? Of course they are! So I’m not sure what we could say except we’ll done on Rl for getting teams up in the us and Canada .
