AFL’s China experiment should have NRL fans worried and asking why we weren’t there first

Which is the best football code? Here you can have it out with other football fans.

Ummm did I say they were great? Why should people invest in something they have nothing apart of? Give them a team and then put up some ratings, until then, we will not know. Kangaroo, SOO and the GF games seem to rate decent enough without any representatives from that part of the world so it shows there is a base there that will watch if the product is good enough and they have something they can invest in as in the National team. And if we were talking about only placing teams in places that had good ratings, we'd have to get rid of the Swans, Giants, Suns, Lions and the Storm. That's sounds pretty smart huh?

(Actually it sounds too good to be true, you lot fuck off back to your areas and we'll stay in ours)

lol, if and when the NRL puts teams in other states, they'll have support. You seem to think RL has no history at all in these states yet how come all the touring sides used to stop off in all the states and territories (bar Tasmania) and play state sides and or clubs and have done since way back in the 1940's? They only stopped really in the 90's when the SL was made and the UK clubs switched to summer meaning the old tours from the Poms and the French and Kiwis stopped.

I have old books here with crowds and gate receipts going back to some of the first tours of those states. Heck even South Australia was an annual stop off and used to average around 10k in some old stadium over there. Not bad considering they had no real contact with the rl heartlands like today and they had no TV when it all started. So there must have been interest and there is still interest. The NRL have yet to tap into it properly.
the ratings for NRL from WA and SA are horrendous. Good luck expanding there
Perth would have no problem having an NRL team there one day.
Test matches have sold out in Perth as well as good crowds whenever Souths play there.

They get better Rugby League crowds in Perth most of the time than the Giants get in Western Sydney.

youd be pretty stupid to compare one-off games to regular season games. Oh yeah, you are stupid

Has anyone addressed this from the article

“An NRL Growth Fund will have made $200m available for investment in key projects.” Fail. Chief executive Todd Greenberg has said he will look to lend $25 million this year for cash flow.

“Club memberships will reach 400,000.” Fail. There is slightly more than 300,000.

“Average attendance at NRL games will increase to 20,000.” Fail. Crowds averaged 16,415 in 2012 and are 15,557 this year. No year in between reached a 16,000 average.

“700,000 people will play in competition.” Fail. The number playing the game is about 170,000. Including women.

“Central revenue will have doubled to more than $300m.” Fail.

Just seems this was washed over but I thought it formed the crux of the article ?

They all make long term prediction and fall short . Politicians , CEO, even your mob. The article itself was written by the telecrap and puts the worst possible slant on it.

Both broadcast and non broadcast revenue have doubled since the commission took office.
Rugby League, the dominant force in Australian sport!

Yeah possibly. They are facts though aren't they and compared to the afl targets doesn't look so good. Good point re revenue though.

Roy masters was saying in the thst clubs need to earn more of their own money in nrl... said they do about 1/3 whilst afl 50 percent ?

You can count nz ratings just don't use them to argue rl is more popular in Australia. Makes perfect sense.

This whole thing about afl or Aussie rules being Victorian fails to take into account that it is the dominant code in tassie, south Australia, Western Australia, and Northern Territory. That it has a strong presence in other areas such as Riverina, broken hill region, Gold Coast and in Brisbane... with strong grassroots across the nation ... something the likes of which rl would die for.

As for international presence, it seems to me that most posts on here lately about this are from rl people. Australian Rulrs is australuas game and that's fine by me and it seems others here. Sure, they may look to play games overseas and have or had an eye to nz but that is neither here nor there... if they don't get on board then who cares. Afl is by far the biggest sporting organisation. In this country. They are in that position. Because they haven't sat on their hands the last 30 years. Look at where the afl and Aussie rules is now compared to rl. Rugby league hardly has any players from non traditional states and thus reflects how little it has grown. Look at afl. How many players are there from qld and nsw who have come through the local system?
That's all you AFL guys can do. Talk about players in one country.

The NRL has never has more international players in it's comp.

The amount of Islanders playing in the NRL these days shows how much growth Rugby league has had in Pacific Nations. While AFL can't even pay Australian born Islanders like Izzy millions to stay in their sport

Then we have guys like Sam Burgess and Gareth Widdop from England who are some of the best players in the NRL. Which just shows the talent available in the Northern Competition.

AFL is really just a one trick pony. You are one single organization in one country.
You don't have other organizations pushing your sport in the Northern Hemisphere like Rugby League does.
No RLIF or Super League. Nothing lol :(/
Nobody else believes in AFL outside Australia, and nobody else ever will.

I think you're right there. Sure there are players from the United States and Ireland but Australian rules is purely an Australian game. I think most Aussies that support Aussie rules are happy with that. I generally seems non Australian rules supporters tend to bring this up more so than anyone else.

Our game is Australia's game and I'm fine with that.
