As part of a seven-year deal with the Victorian Government, the sports-mad city will see two Origin clashes in 2021 and 2025 and Kangaroos' Tests in 2022 and 2023 in a package deal that has also claimed the return of the All Stars fixture in 2019.

Its that time of year again.

New South Wales' capitulation against Queensland has helped Nine Entertainment book record revenue for the 2017 State of Origin series.....................

Nine would not release its revenues numbers but did disclose revenue jumped to a record level for the three-game series and it is up 18 per cent over the past two years.....................

Television revenue in Australia has been in broad decline, but massive sport events remain one of the sector's biggest drawcards.

This makes the Origin series the most valuable sports program in the country and an ad spot is now fetching $20,000 more for a 30-second spot than the second most valuable – the AFL grand final.

State of Origin push into Melbourne paying off: Peter Beattie

by Jason Clout
Taking the opening State of Origin game to the Melbourne Cricket Ground on June 6 shows rugby league is committed to developing the code beyond its traditional bases of NSW and Queensland, said the Australian Rugby League Commission chairman, Peter Beattie.

The former Queensland Premier said, soon after taking the role at the ARLC, that the code had to grow or it could ultimately falter.

An anticipated crowd of more than 80,000 at the MCG indicates the move into AFL heartland has been a shrewd one by league officials and also underlines the code's commitment to the critical Victorian market.

"Having the game in Melbourne is about engaging more people," said Mr Beattie. "We are looking to build the base of the game."

It has been a solid start to 2018 for rugby league. Crowds are up by around 5 per cent. In what is a tough market for some broadcasters, audience numbers have also been strong with pay TV Fox Sports reporting a 6 per cent increase on all games over 2017, to an average of 246,000 viewers.

As the Origin series is traditionally one of the year's highest-rating programs on free-to-air TV – Game 3 in 2017 alone pulled in more than 2.5 million viewers in the major five city metropolitan markets according to OzTAM – rugby league seems well poised to pursue its growth strategy.

"The NRL clubs have never received more money. The players have never received more money," said Mr Beattie, who said the sport is also formulating a major grassroots policy.

Women's rugby league is continuing to expand. The inaugural NRL women's premiership will be played this year and there will again be a women's State of Origin match.

"Growing women's interest is critical. Any sport which does not have a strategy for growing female involvement will be in trouble," said Mr Beattie.

There are some great companies already involved in rugby league and expanding those links with corporate Australia was a priority, he said. Meetings with many of the biggest businesses will be held over time.

New clubs

The inclusion of new board members Peter V'landys and Amanda Laing should build on the strong business links already established, said Mr Beattie.

"It is a good board and [NRL CEO] Todd Greenberg is doing a good job."

Adding Mr V'landys should strengthen the ARLC's ability to negotiate with government, business and other key stakeholders. In his role as chief executive of Racing NSW, Mr V'landys has been instrumental in revitalising horse racing in the state. Along with the efforts of the Australian Turf Club, racing is the strongest it has been in decades.

One question continually raised is the establishment of new NRL clubs, especially in light of the stated aim to grow the game. The $2 billion five-year broadcasting deal underpins the current 16 clubs but fans have asked when more teams might be included, possibly to coincide with the next broadcasting deal.

The challenge for the ARLC is to find new clubs that will be sustainable in the long-term.

Mr Beattie said many areas had been discussed to host extra teams, including Queensland, Perth, New Zealand and others.

"New areas will have to show us they have the right business model. We will take it steady when it comes to expansion."

On the field, he could not be more excited by the standard of football.

"We have a great product. Some of the tries scored this year have been amazing."

NRL claims early victory for $100m digital business

The NRL says its digital business is already scoring well in 2018. Keegan Carroll / Nrlimagery.com

This week marks the start of the biggest time of year for rugby league with game one of State of Origin on Wednesday. But the NRL believes it is already winning with what has been one of its more controversial investments.

Origin matches are almost always among the top 10 most watched shows on Australian TV each year, but have tended to overshadow NRL home-and-away matches. The league hopes a better digital presence can help somewhat overcome the issue at least.

The league is spending $120 million in the next five years on its own digital business, having taken control of its digital assets from Telstra under the terms of its $1 billion broadcast deal signed three years ago.

It marked a significant change in strategy for an Australian sport, and meant the NRL had to convince its clubs it would be better to spend the money establishing its own digital arm rather than outsourcing it to an established media or technology company.

NRL Digital, encompassing a central news website, and sites and apps across the competition's 16 teams, went live in December and while there is clearly a significant news and video component for the business, just as important for the NRL is using it as a data-gathering exercise.

That means it can better understand its fans, convince more of them to attend matches and buy memberships for their clubs and also sell merchandise and other offerings to them.

"It is also important in the terms of the acquisition or retention of sponsors," says NRL Digital boss Rebekah Horne. "Just about every ad campaign these days has a significant digital component to it, so we needed to show we have a 360-degree solution and people across all platforms."

So far, almost three months into the season and heading into the three-match State of Origin series, the NRL is satisfied with how the digital business is performing.

Horne says NRL.com and associated websites have an average of 2.6 million visitors per week and the number of live pass subscriptions consumers are buying via Telstra to watch matches on the handsets and devices are up 95 per cent compared to last year.

"We are averaging about 300,000 streams per game, and if you add that to the TV numbers – which are broadly holding steady after the first 11 rounds – we think that is pretty good. As an industry we've learnt the lesson that people no longer watch just on TV, so we think this is making a difference."

Telstra still retains streaming rights and has built a new NRL app in conjunction with the league. The NRL and Telstra also share some commercial income.

The NRL has also asked website users to register this year, which Horne says has resulted in about 800,000 people signing up. "We built an entirely new identity product. So we've got all this data and about 60 per cent of those ID records of people are new to us. So there's a really big opportunity there for us to get to know the new people and really understand what they want and better service them."

Each person is asked who their favourite club is, information which can then be used to tailor ticketing, merchandise and membership packages. Horne cites the West Tigers as a good example of a club doing a better job with its digital assets, which has resulted in the team breaking its membership record this season.

"Memberships across all the clubs are up past 300,000 already this season [ahead of the same time in 2017]. Some clubs are up 30 per cent from last year, some are up 10 per cent. So we think this helps us. And there are also clubs doing well commercially from their digital assets as well."

Both South Sydney and the Melbourne Storm, two of the more popular clubs in the competition, are on track to write about $1 million in digital advertising revenue each this year, according to Horne.

The league is also using its digital assets to drive an increase in participation numbers via its Play NRL website. Horne says women have been a big source of player growth, with female participants up 23 per cent compared to last year.

The NRL now has about 2.5 million fans across all the social media accounts, and the NRL will use the accounts to amplify events during and around the three State of Origin clashes, beginning with game one in Melbourne.

More than 80,000 people are expected at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the television audience could peak at more than 4 million viewers nationwide .

The audience will be provided with information and statistics via the Telstra Tracker feature, which will also be pushed out via graphics and data via NRL social media accounts and websites. The data is gathered from tracking devices made by ASX-listed Catapult Group International and worn by all the players.

to expand on that>>

The west coast of the US is the favoured destination for the match, with Los Angeles and San Francisco in the mix.

The Rabbitohs met with the broadcasters last week to discuss plans surrounding the match on the west coast of the United States.

It's understood the Melbourne Storm and the Brisbane Broncos have been discussed as potential opponents.

It has been proposed that two teams will travel to the United States at least 10 days before the game to allow players to acclimatise and adjust to the time difference. It's almost double the amount of time players will spend in preparing for the Denver Test;
The two teams will travel on direct flights to the destination. This may make Los Angeles the favoured destination, given there aren't direct flights to San Francisco from all major Australian cities every day. Players travelling to Denver next week will have to hop on connecting flights;
Teams will be given at least 12 days to recover after the game. Plans revolve around a standalone match to open the season in California before the remaining 14 teams open their season a week later back home. This will give the two teams two weeks to re-adjust. Some players in the Denver Test will have just three days at home before resuming NRL duties;

Stated in other threads but in more depth>>

NRL posts $28 million half-year profit

The NRL claims the game has never been in better financial shape - and they've shown everyone in clubland the numbers to prove it.

As promised when he took over, ARL Commission chairman Peter Beattie on Friday opened the league's books to club and state chairmen and chief executives.

And what they found was a $27.8 million surplus over the first half of the season

The NRL trumpeted a 29 per cent increase in sponsorship, a 39 per cent rise in distributions to clubs and a 17 per cent jump in funding to the states.

It is believed the rise in club grants could result in at least six of them posting a surplus in what would be a first for the code.

The NRL also said Australian TV audiences were up one million viewers on last year while crowds had grown three per cent.

"This is the first time this has actually happened, that we've shared every bit of the finances with the clubs, the chairs and the states," Beattie said.
Clubs have also secured a combined $316.9 million for centres of excellence. Wests Tigers will get $58m of it while some will go towards facilities in Victoria and Northern Territory.
