The report commissioned by the AFL said you were heading for bankruptcy. The VFL/AFL may have fucked around and made a few changes internally, but externally nobody cared. Something that pisses you Southeners off - Nobody gives a fark about your game - never has and never will!

Murdoch's billions made it impossible for him not to get whatever he wanted.
As usual, you pretty much ignore whatever anyone else says in favour of your own narrative.

The league decided that expansion was the solution to its financial troubles in late 1985 - and that it was also the only way to stave off the Elliot backed new league.

Yes, some clubs were effectively bankrupt - 7 of them recieved warnings from regulators in Victoria - and the league was in trouble. That lasted until the end of 1986 when the Eagles and Bears paid 4 million each up front for licenses - and the earlier sale of the Swans - and the leagues financial troubles were put to bed when they signed the 30 million 5 year tv deal at the end of 1987 with Seven.

The fact is the VFL franchise system adopted in 1985, where the league owned the colours, jumper designs, club nicknames and a bunch of other stuff, would have actively prevented anyone taking those teams anywhere without starting from scratch. Not to mention all the other stuff I mentioned about the league actually following its recommendations - with success.
And as usual you come up with some wishy washy AFL view of the world. The facts are they had no alternative ..... they were forced by there own negligence to change.

The NRL on the other had contracts, and agreements in place and most of the other things you mentioned. But news LTD started up there own teams there own competition . They had teams of lawyers who specialised in breaking contracts. They had several pages of Negative anti nrl stuff in the papers every day. If they couldn't get there way they just paid to get it.

It seems GWS and the Suns are funded entirely by TV revenue.
One thing I think the NRL could easily do too.
But they seem more intent on expanding reserve grade club comps and adding teams like Fiji, Samoa etc..

The most promising expansion at the moment is from non NRL rugby league with teams like Toronto Wolfpack.
