Figures regarding how much every club was paid by the AFL in 2016 have been released, with expansion club GWS well out in front.

The Giants received over $21 million from the league in 2016, around $3 million above St Kilda in second place and double what Fremantle and Adelaide received, according to a report in the Herald Sun.

The league handed out $255 million in revenue to the 18 clubs, based on each club's financial circumstances and other factors.

GWS chief executive David Matthews told the Herald Sun the raw figures didn't tell the whole story.

“It’s on the record we might get $20 million but every club gets $10 million or $11 million,’’ he said.



“We might get more than Gold Coast and four or five million more than a couple of Melbourne clubs who have been around for 150 million years.

“But what we talk to the AFL Commission about is are we on track, are we growing our revenue streams?"

Matthews said GWS and Gold Coast were already proving their worth, suggesting the AFL's revenue has gone right up as the amount of matches each week has inreased.

“The simple headline on the investment is the AFL has already got the investment back by creating the ninth game (every week)," he said.

“That extra game is worth $57 million. If you split it equally with us and the Gold Coast we are already washing our face."

Interesting. I thought the giants would have got lots more given all the hype of what they are costing. It seems clubs get their share of broadcast rights then topped up based on their financial circumstances. Given it is the biggest sporting business in the country it's hard to question such a successful business model. Clubs will all struggle from time to time so it's good to see them looking at the big long term picture.

Seeing the courier mail today having a season lift out for the afl indicates some progress. Interesting section on qafl and growth in the game at junior level and also at senior level. Also women's afl is soaring with 35 new teams in 2016.

So the investment is paying off.

11 percent growth in club footy with 27938 players. 15477 of those juniors with 1192 teams at 179 community clubs.

That's pretty good and are club numbers not Auskick which was listed separately at 28273 "participants"

Clubs get a share of the Tv rights, money from sales of merchandise and AFL memberships, so teams from 9-18 really get what they are entitled to. Teams playing out of Etihad got extra assitance probably due to the shocking deal they had with the stadium owners, however, this shouldnt be an issue now the AFL own the stadium. GWS and Suns are still establishing themselves so extra support is warranted. Brisbane is the only real concern on that list IMO.

Agreed Nrol Brisbane is a concern however Aussie rules at lower levels appears to be doing exceptionally well.

No AFL club gets the same assistance as the Broncos. Yes it's off field, but its a major reason why they remain successful year after year, all for ratings.
