I'm looking forward to the big AFL clash in China. It can only lead to bigger and better things. It will put AFL on the word map'. :_<> :_<> :_<> :(/ :(/ :(/
least they are fucking going to china. How many attempts did league clubs make and fail or bail on?

During the Superleague period, it was planned that games would eventually be played in China.

In 2012 it was reported that Canberra was talking to Manly about playing a match for points in Hong Kong, but that match never eventuated. Club sponsors, including the Raiders sponsor, Huawei, were keen for a game to be played in the home country, but plans were abandoned when support from the NRL was not forthcoming.

In 2013, Channel 9 and the Chinese Government were reportedly supportive of the match happening, and the NRL had appointed an independent consultant to look into it further.

In August 2016, Fairfax reported that Canberra conceded that it was probably never going to happen.

In 2015 it was reported that the NRL supported a concept to take the game to China as put forward by former coach Paul Broughton. Under the plan , half a-dozen athletes, hand-picked from China’s 1.35 billion population, will be brought to Australia and placed with NRL clubs, while some coaches will be taken to China to expand the game there. However, a year later, Fairfax media reported that Broughtons was more or less being ignored by the NRL hierarchy, however shortly after the report the NRL evidently gave its approval to the plan.

Australian Rugby Union

In early 2015, the Canberra Times reported that the ACT Brumbies were set to play a preseason game in China backed by Aquis, their major sponsor. If successful this would have led to proper season matches in the country. In August 2016, the Times reported that the Brumbies were no longer entertaining the idea.

You guys keep pulling each others leg, on Tuesday Western Sydney Wanderers are playing in Shanghai against Shanghai SIPG for points and prizemoney.

Brisbane have already played in China a few weeks ago and knocked off one of the biggest football clubs in Asia.

oh by the way the team the Wanderers are up against total squad value around 80 million euro, with two National Brazilian players although Hulk is pretty much on the outer these days. And are coached by former Premier League coach AVB.

So you guys are really just faffing around the edges.

Not sure Rugby needs to go to China, but would love to see the continued development in Japan

Who gives a fuck how much the squad costs they are up against

You know what matters here? the fact that despite your claims of asian supremacy, no one in the country gives a fuck. Crowds for ACL matches are even lower than A-league ones, and the ratings are as bad if not worse.
Really?? So what are the ratings for ACL matches in China?? The fumblers were saying last year that one of their games rated 4mill In China. As I am usually a little cynical of any fumble numbers posted anywhere I asked if anyone could verify that number but got no answers. Do you know if that 4mill number was correct Wookie?

I was actually referring to the crowds and ratings in Australia.
Port Adelaide’s round three home-ground win against Essendon on April 8 drew an average of 2.12 million viewers in China, compared with 947,025 across Australia. That increased to 3.87 million for Port Adelaide’s round five loss to Geelong, watched by 858,386 in Australia.

Why only Australia, oh that's right because AFL have no other option.

Is the Rugby TV rights any worse because a significant % is from South Africa? no because it is the competition it is the very nature of it being international.

Funny how much is made about poor Football crowds for ACL etc yet AFLW with free entry played on the weekended get less people and the media go mental for it LOL. Now not sure why you AFL types are bothering in this thread, it is after all about international competitions that people are watching. You appear to have neither

You can get minimal ratings information. However if someone else can point me to the Aleague or NRL ratings in the UK Ill be happy to include them.
Ill try get the ratings for super rugby in the other countries as well not just for Australia as its pathetic. Super rugby is well watched in the UK so will try and get those ratings if possible.

I thought i would answer for you Post Hoc

Superleague sides are in round 2 of the season when these teams play in the WCC.

Significant no, but it is definitely a confidence boost for the Super league considering they have lost all prior matches since it started 3 years ago.

NRL teams are starting to realize that going to ENG in the off season for these WCC matches has a huge effect (Negative) on your chances of winning the NRL premiership the following year.

NRL teams are starting to pull out due to this perception.

You do that.

Ive said this once and ill say it again - i collect ratings for my own reference - that anyone else finds them useful is not the point to me and never has been. So you can say its as pathetic as you like - Ive not once seen any of you post these ratings from elsewhere, but apparently I should go out of my way to do your fucking work for you. Piss off.
Wowowow calm down there Wookie , the pathetic comment was in reference to the ratings of the Australia super rugby teams and how poor it is in comparison to the other sports, not the research you have done. So relax mate.

Thanks for that, that is a little sad to hear that the perception is a negative next season. I suspect it is a case of Post hoc ergo propter hoc, and other factors are the cause. Salary cap most likely.

In A League had to back up next season because of the salary cap and the winning teams usually get raided for players. So wouldn't surprise me if NRL is similar

Yeah England will be out to prove themselves in the rlwc.

One thing I don't understand with the super rugby is why no European teams are in it?
Has there ever been talk of including them?
Because they have their own competitions. Aviva premiership in England, pro 12 in Scotland, wales, Ireland and Italy (which are looking to include and USA and Canadian team. Top 14 in France. Other countries like Georgia, Russia, Spain, Romania have their own semi/pro competitions.
Ah that's why. They should definitely have a champions league at the end of each year. Would do so well. They have the depth to do it.

I think it is only a matter of time before Canada and the USA get more into Rugby codes. Are two nations that love full contact sports. Plenty of room for teams there.

With a big year of sports underway domestically we are also in for a big year of international sports. So which tournament are you looking forward to most?

1) rugby league World Cup - bringing together the best rugby league players from around world to see which nation is king? Could we hope to see a new team in the finals? Or will it once again be the two powerhouses of rugby league?

2) lions tour - bringing together the best players from the home nations, Scotland, Ireland, wales and England in a quest to do something every nation struggles to do and win a series in the land of the long white cloud!

3) confederations cup - a curtain raiser for the football World Cup, this tournament will see the best 8 teams from their respected confederations. As well as host nation Russia and current World Cup holders Germany do battle with an ever improving Australian team and our cousins from across the ditch.

4) The AFL ummmmmm :-k 8-[ . Can anyone help me out here. Anything interesting happening this year or is it the same suburbian comp? Which is exciting. Love seeing suburbs go toe to toe in a battle of who's got the best looking cousin/wife Collingwood? Or Geelong?
Yeah mate that AFL international cup that nobody watches and tv keeps rejecting should be riveting.
Anything to keep that false international hope alive.
