What is there next for Australian rules football.

Having set off on their journey to grow the game in qld and Sydney, what is next for the afl. Do they look at Tasmania where afl already dominates or do they look to a third team in South aus or wa? Is Newcastle an option or do they look to nz? My thinking is the need to consolidate. Gws is looking like a struggle at best and they will need to work hard there. Suns are going very nicely and are a part of the Gold Coast however we know how fickle the Gold Coast punters can be . Brisbane still requires work but an established afl presence exists although be wary of complacency. So where to next ... Or is it just sit still and consolidate?

agree. They need to let the current setup consolidate for at least a decade before any thoughts of new teams. By then a third Perth team and Tasmanian team should be closer.

when the lions where up and running they where drawing more than the broncos, but their biggest problem has been the board members internal fighting & stupid management decisions, crowds will always be rather fickle in expansion areas, but the game has grown a lot in SE QLD in the last 20 years, so when the lions start winning some games, the crowds will come back.

Tassie would be a great idea for a side, but it has a small population spread out far and wide, & not sure if the state could financial support a side full time, the greens have farrrked that place!
teams what hawthon and north melbourne are doing playing several home games there is on the right track, but hopefully they will continue to do so & increase the number of games they play over there, build a solid supporter base & maybe in the long term

personalty if a new team was to come in to the comp it would have to be WA, its the fastest growing major city in AUS, both the dockers and eagles are probably the financially the strongest in the country, there are waiting lists for memberships because both clubs have out grown subiaco, & perth has a brand new stadium being built

You ask what is next for Australian Football. Australian Football has always been played in Australia and New Zealand.
Australian Football is so strong in Tasmania that it divides the state. Newcastle has the longest surviving football competition in the world.
New Zealand has defeated some Australian states. There has always been a football league in Sydney.
And Australian Football is played in 70 countries around the world at differing levels.
You really are asking what is next for AFL.
Tasmania adds little to the equation as it is already an Australian Football state.
There are already 18 teams in the AFL so adding another team has to be decisive.
IMO there will be a period of consolidation, regional affiliation and possible relocation.
Tasmania will move closer to having it's own team.
Clubs will adopt regions. WB Ballarat, GC Cairns, PA NT, STK NZ, GWS Canberra.
Down the track Newcastle, Wollongong and Wagga will host games.
Apart from NZ it is hard to see an AFL presence overseas but there are good opportunities for second tier AR comtpetiions to get involved.

I think it is a mistake for local games such as Australian Rules and to the same extent Rugby League to get too big overseas. Sure, garner some interest however, imagine, if rugby league becomes really popular in England - to the point of saying rivalling soccer or even Rugby Union. What would that mean for rugby league in Australia? Would all the best players go to England as the money would be much better and it would be more lucrative. It may be a poisoned chalice.
