Re: International AFL vs International RL
Yes, and delivering wonderful news all the time.
http://www.pngnrlbid.com/index.php?page_id=95
http://www.pngnrlbid.com/index.php?page_id=95
THE PNG NRL Bid was brought up to the highest level in the British Commonwealth when The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles asked: “ Rugby league must be very popular in Papua New Guinea.?”
To which, newly invested knight, Sir Mahuru Dadi Toka replied: “Yes.”
He then added: “This is the PNG NRL Bid necktie I am wearing Your Highness, and we are bidding to put a team into the NRL competition in Australia,” while showing Prince Charles the Bid necktie which was a stand out … with the PNG colours of red, black and gold.
The 73-year-old Hanuabadan had only three minutes, from the time he was called into the chamber to be invested for his services to the community and to rugby league in Papua New Guinea, with a Knights Bachelor, and to converse with
Prince Charles. But his PNG NRL Bid necktie is another story altogether.
YOU see, Sir Dadi was given the Bid necktie by the National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop during a visit by popular NRL commentator Phil “Gus” Gould at a function at Parliament House early this year.
Sir Dadi kept the tie, and it was not until he was informed of his name being accepted on the roll of the Independence Day Queens Honours list that a plan was hatched in his mind.
Upon his name being accepted to be knighted, his family stepped in, saying that if he was to be bestowed with this prestigious award by Her Majesty the Queen, it would be only fitting and rightful that this “ordinary man” be invested at the Queens home at Buckingham Palace.
His plan that was hatched in September – to promote the PNG NRL Bid - was finally executed at Buckingham Palace after he was knighted by Prince Charles.
“I fulfilled what the Governor (Powes Parkop) asked me to do,” Sir Dadi said.
NCD Governor Powes Parkop – a committee member of the PNG NRL Bid who was relayed the experience by Sir Dadi on his arrival from London on Monday was very appreciative.
“We are very proud of his (Sir Dadi) achievement and going to Buckingham Palace to receive his knighthood and for using the occasion to promote the Bid,” Parkop said.
However on a lighter note, the Hanuabadan was almost going to let his tongue slip but just as well he didn’t.
“Hhad I realised that the Kumuls would be playing England this weekend I would have said “We will beat England,” the newly knighted Sir Dadi chuckles as he relays his threeminutes of fame with Prince Charles in Buckingham Palace in London.
Sir Dadi’s investiture was formalised at Buckingham Palace by the Prince of Wales on Friday, October 29, at 11am.
While the trip to Buckingham Palace was an experience of a life time for Sir Dadi, he also paid gratitude to the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and the National Government.
“It is a great honour that I have been recognised for my part in sports.”
“I take this opportunity with humility to thank our Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and the National Government, my family and my business partners, for their great support to me in achieving this recognition,” Sir Dadi said, holding back a tear.
But for the 73-year-old, there’s no slowing down. In fact, it’s back to the future.
With a spirit of competition and a go-getter attitude there can be no doubting that the sky is the limit, and “where there is a will ... there is a way.
For this ordinary man and knight of the realm, Sir Mahuru Dadi Toka knows the way, because he has come up the hard way ... from the school of hard knocks.

Re: International AFL vs International RL
Bad news for AFL in PNG though.

THE PNG NRL Bid is in favour of having a multi-purpose stadium for rugby, rugby league and football as these three sports have huge following and are widely played across the country.
In a media release in response to PNG Cricket’s national coaching director Andy Bichel’s comments on cricket ground size stadium, the Bid office said that the NRL will only accept a Bid proposal if the stadium is similar to stadiums such as Suncorp, that being rectangular and where fan involvement is maximised.
“Mr Bichel’s home state of Queensland has the Gabba and the new Gold Coast stadiums which are sports specific, Cricket and AFL.
“Suncorp and Skilled Park are home to rugby league, football and rugby all of which are played at a national and international level.
“PNG is moving strongly to become a member of the NRL and when people such as Mal Meninga, and former Kumul greats want to see junior league, structures revisited, and schoolboy rugby league all forming pathways to the existing bemobile cup and the NRL then people listen and it will happen.”
Bid strategic adviser Paul Broughton said that this week, PNG became a part of the Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) through the Pacific Islands Rugby League (PIRL) an initiative of the PNGNRL Bid which kicked off at the last Pacific Cup time.
“Rugby is the first sport in all the visiting Pacific Island nations for the games and league and soccer follow closely. “As a consequence invited national and international games will be played post 2015 Games in the above codes.
“The question to be addressed is this, post 2015 Games, the stadium will need a permanent hirer.
“It will also need to be a facility which attracts sponsors to invite international teams to PNG to play out of a stadium that is conducive for fans to be involved.
“Grounds such as Eden Park and the Sydney Cricket Ground are historic and league games are played there perhaps once a year perhaps but rugby, league, and football fans want to part of the action. “Being a family in the end zone of a cricket ground sized facility where family concessions are sometimes seated can be a long long way from the action at the other end of the field in a rugby league, rugby or football game. “After all, whatever we as the caretakers of sport we care about must always be mindful that the game belongs to two groups, the players and the fans.
“The PNGNRL Bid applauds the decision for a multipurpose stadium for rugby, rugby League and football, given the passion the Papua New Guineans and the nations of the Pacific region have for those codes.
“One would hope that a cricket specific facility is not far away as the country begins to emerge as a competitive sports nation.
“The PNGRFL is the sovereign body of the sport and all rugby league conducted competitions must be affiliated with that organisation, it follows that there is an increasing awareness that change is about to happen and out of the recent Four Nations a feeling of optimism is in the air,” said Broughton.

Hmmm, I heard the PNG PM say there was over 1 million players in PNG Rugby League, but a 3rd is massive, PNG is heading towards 7 million people now and they are a very young nation in demographics (one of the youngest nations on Earth).
I say give them a team, build a suncorp stadium or something like it and bring it on.

Papua New Guinea has kicked off its bid to enter a team in the NRL competition.
Rugby league is PNG's national sport and the NRL is considered a sporting nirvana.
But gaining entry to the NRL has wider implication than simply sporting success - it would provide unifying direction for millions of diehard fans who often play year round, barefoot, in searing heat and on rock-hard surfaces.
PNG political elite know the potential and on Tuesday Prime Minister Michael Somare gave 500,000 kina ($250,000) of government money towards a bid team to develop an NRL proposal for entry.
Gold Coast Titans chairman Paul Broughton and Queensland coach Mal Meninga are also assisting the bid team.
PNG's deputy Prime Minister Puka Temu said the government is approaching private enterprise to help achieve the necessary criteria for entry into the competition.
"Imagine a PNG team in the NRL competition, imagine the opportunities, and imagine the strengthening of the PNG and Australia relationship," Mr Temu said.
"To have our very own NRL team would unite the whole country."
PNG rugby league president Danny Holmes said an estimated third of PNG's six million population plays league.
"We can have more influence than the government, that's how important and big this is," he said.
"The implications are greater than just having a footy side in the NRL, it gives a big time goal to every kid who puts a boot on.
"We've been using league as a way for kids to learn to be part of a team and a community with a common goal, to learn life skills and confidence," he said.
Mr Holmes admits it is not going to be an easy journey to the NRL.
"The government has researched and there is corporate interest," he said.
"The time frame is eight years but there is also talk about 2012, when Somare may retire, so we see."

PAPUA New Guinea have launched their bid to enter a team into the Australian NRL competition.
Rugby league is officially PNG’s national sport and the NRL is considered the ultimate goal for aspiring players.
But entering the NRL has wider implication than simply sporting success - it provides a unifying direction for millions of die hard fans who often play all year round, barefoot, in searing heat and on rock hard surfaces.
PNG political elite know the potential and on Tuesday Prime Minister Michael Somare gave 500,000 kina ($250,000) of government money towards an official team to develop a NRL proposal.
Gold Coast Titans chairman Paul Broughton and Queensland coach Mal Meninga are also part of PNG's 'bid team'.
PNG's deputy Prime Minister Puka Temu said the government is now approaching private enterprise to help achieve the necessary criteria for entry into the competition.
“Imagine a PNG team in the NRL competition, imagine the opportunities, and imagine the strengthening of the PNG and Australia relationship,'' he said.

I'm sorry nsw but I dont take your word or your links. You're a liar and a bad man.
Meanwhile superb news parra. PNG are awesome I reckon, I watched them play australia and they got a bit of a thumping but they have real potential. And can they hit! Far out some mammoth shoulder charges which would have laid the likes of Barry Hall out for weeks. They need some good coaching staff up there. A good trainer and someone who can coach, but also is able to get in touch with the culture is essential. Tough to find though.
Also parra thanks for the spybot tip. I'll get it and maybe tentatively approach nsw links.
