Decider heads for a sell-out
By Steve Mascord
June 15, 2006
ORIGIN III at Telstra Dome in Melbourne is expected to be a sell-out by the end of the week.
Despite expectations the July 5 series closer would be a dead rubber, 49,000 tickets had been sold by the time last night's second interstate encounter kicked off at Suncorp Stadium.
"There are only about 2000 tickets left," Australian Rugby League chief executive Geoff Carr said.
New South Wales and Queensland will each spend a week and a half in camp in Melbourne to promote the game. |

Even I am surprised at how huge this game is going to be in Melbourne...
Here is the latest...

Queensland's victory quickly turned the deciding third match at Melbourne's Telstra Dome into a sellout today.
Ticket offices were rushed in the wake of the Maroons' upset win and remaining tickets for the July 5 match were snapped up for the 53,355-capacity venue.
It will be the first time an Origin series decider has been staged outside of Sydney or Brisbane.
Rugby league officials have opened discussions with Telstra Dome management about whether to introduce up to 3000 standing room tickets for the July 5 match.
The two teams will arrive in Melbourne a week ahead of the match and will be involved in a week long promotion.
The sellout event recaptures the enthusiasm of the melbourne Cricket Ground in 1994, when Origin played to a Melbourne crowd of 87,161. |
Next time they will have to go back to the MCG - they would have got 90,000 there this year I reckon... |

Any idea yet what time the game will be broadcast in Victoria by Channel 9? Last night's game was broadcast at 11.30pm following the AFL has beens game.
Doesn't bode well for Origin 3, particulalary when you see the ratings for Origin 1 broadcast at 9:30pm in Melbourne. The sellout crowd for Origin 3 will be a once off. I was at the first SoO played at the MCG with a crowd of 87,000. As was shown in the years to follow, the crowds in Melbourne dropped off in huge numbers once the novelty wore off. Let's also consider how many of those at Origin 3 this year will actually be from NSW and QLD or expats. Melbourne Storm average home crowds tell the real story for rugby league in Victoria. What is it for the top of the table Melbourne Storm in the NRL? 8,000 aveage home crowd? |
