Half time in the Carlton -v- Swans game. This would have to be one of the ugliest games I've ever seen in perfect conditions.
Sure Sydney will eventually win, but what are they doing for promotion of this great game by their negative approach to football? How many fans or potential markets are they turning off and steering towards soccer, league and union? I'd say plenty!!
Things such as playing for the line, smothering the ball, kicking behind the advantage line, flooding, trying to control the ball regardless of attacking options being available - these things are counter-productive and fly in the face of the great tradition that has taken over a century to build up in this country.
Do people really believe this brand of football is conducive to establishing a second AFL team in Western Sydney? I don't!
Swans fans like KE, Bridget, JFBay22, and Beaussie will tolerate this style of play as long as Sydney are successful, but there will be empty seats aplenty at the SCG in future months and years. People are not prepared to pay good money to watch this ****! TV viewers will switch to other channels.
It's bloody disgraceful. Carlton are battlers - you'd expect negative play from them as they are outskilled - but the premiers should be embarassed by what they are doing.
For me, the Iron Chef awaits!!  |

Whilst I didn't watch any of this game ( and not likely to watch any other games of AFL this year either mind you..), it seems this issue has replaced " the clash jumper" as the biggest whinge on Big Footy...
If the style of play upsets the Melbourne turds, then it can't be all that bad in my opinion... |

Yes it wasn't a great spectacle last night but the win is all that matters. We were lucky to get away with the win last night and desperately needed it to build some confidence. It's still a worry though that we would struggle in such a way against last seasons wooden spooners. In the end I was just happy to get the 4 points and hope from here on in we can improve further starting with Melbourne at the SCG on Sunday before taking on Geelong.
The criticism of the Swans style of play has been going on for ages now. If the Swans keep winning though, who really cares how it is done? Remember Andrew Demetriou's famous words last year about the Swans and their style of play? 
A million + viewers tuned in in Sydney alone last season for the AFL GF and it was the second most watched GF in AFL/VFL history (the other of course also involving the Swans in 96). Like I said who really cares how the win is achieved, as long as the victories continue. We simply play to our strengths and that is slowing the game down to control it. Oh and we weren't the only team playing the negative tactics last night. Funny how we cop all the flak though. ATM like I said I'm just happy we got the 4pts. The handballing by the Swans still frustrates me and definately needs addressing. Why of why do we handball to a man already under pressure and continually turn the ball over? Anyone else notice LRT's brain explosion that resulted in a Carlton goal last night?  |

Beaussie - you so eloquently quote Grand Final ratings in Sydney, however, if the Swans aren't involved, how many of those 'supporters' would actually be watching? Very few.
That is my point that you have sidestepped. The way Sydney plays the game is not going to win long term supporters to the game who will still follow the competition even if Sydney have a bad year or two. Anyone can jump on a winning bandwagon, but the litmus test is how many will be around when things go awry?
Brisbane, on the other hand have attracted supporters due to their success, however the way they have attacked and played attractive positive footy means that their supporters will still follow the game regardless of how many wins their team has. The number of people at their last home game (36,500) demonstrates this point.
As I said, sluts like Bridget will sing the victory song, but they will scurry like mongrel dogs once the side starts losing.

Don't quote Grand Final television audiences - home and away crowds are a fair test - despite their winning the flag, the unveiling of their premiership flag and a display of Swans past players and officials they could still only attract 33,000 (approx.) to their opening home game - not a great testament to their success! |

Well if history to date is anything to go by, enough to ensure the AFL GF always wins it timeslot in Sydney. More impressive figures are naturally achieved when Sydney is involved.

Pfft, the same **** was said last year by virtually every commentator and even the AFL CEO. Didn't stop the people of Sydney tuning in, in huge numbers for the AFL GF. I take it you also didn't see George St lined with a 1/4 million Sydneysiders for a team that plays a game that turns people off? Sydney loves winners and the style of play the Swans play (at least last year), ensures more wins than losses. Sydney poeple are happy. It's all good. You don't have to win playing a spectacular footy. At the end of the day, the fans just want a victory. Is that so hard for you to comprehend?

Well we've only had one home game and it was a sellout despite many members not showing on the day for whatever reason. Things will pick up and I've no doubt a huge crowd will be in attendance for Sydney vs Geelong at Telstra Stadium in a couple of weeks time. You just watch and see.  |

Beaussie i think you downplay the swans a bit here. Their style of play especially in the latter half of last season was nothing short of spectacular and is the reason they won the flag. They are one of the fastest teams going around and when they choose to 'turn it on' they play a very fast and furious style of play. Croc man is just fishing for bites, its obvious and quite funny considering his team is now officially the slowest team in the afl. Its amazing how much footspeed they've lost . I swear i heard 5 different media quoting the lions as slow, sluggish, old etc etc etc over the weekend
And talking about fishing...hey croc dont you still owe beaussie cash?

And ahh the lions?
Comon croc you look like a tool here seriously... you have to work harder, this same old line is getting tiresome and noone else is backing you. Beaussie told me yesterday that Vosses ass has gotten atleast double the size since the lions last premiership. Now i cant say i've been looking at his ass but if beaussie's right and im sure on this one he is, then the lions have a long long way to go dont ya think?

1. It's "arse" not "ass" - we don't live in America.
2. He (Voss) has definately lost a few yards in pace - must be all those premiership and Bronlow medals slowing him down!
3. If you seriously think the Swans are superior and faster than the Lions then you will want to back the Swans to beat the Lions at the Gabba in 2 weeks time. I'll give you even money now! Minimum bet is $200 my friend and you must post your acceptance of my offer in this thread by this Friday 21st April.

I want to know why this friday croc? The game isnt till round 6. Hows about the finalisation for the bet be laid down in 2 wednesday's time?
